Research Help—Get and Give

Do you have questions about researching your family, and would like to talk to an experienced researcher about them? You can now contact a FamilySearch Volunteer with your questions about any research topic. Call 866-234-2067, or start a chat with a volunteer experienced in both research and helping others.

Additionally, we have genealogists available who have specific experience in the following states:

  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Virginia

To speak  with someone who has experience researching in these areas, and who can help guide you in the right direction, visit FamilySearch Labs, and scroll down select a state under Research Assistance.

Give Help

Would you like to be part of helping others find success with their genealogy research, live over the phone or through online chat?

In addition to the above states, you can help in one of these areas:

  • General assistance with questions where there is no specialist group available
  • Family history for Latter-day Saints

Mention additional areas where you have experience when you register as a volunteer, and we will begin creating additional specialist groups based on that information.

How much time does it take to be a volunteer?

You can volunteer as much or as little time as you would like. And you choose when you want to receive calls.

Who is this pilot intended to serve?

Any patron of FamilySearch.org; anyone who is interested in learning more about their ancestors.

Is there training?

Yes. When you register, request a mentor, and we’ll teach you about the tools you’ll need to be successful. It will include what your best resources are to help the patron, information about how our phone system works, what to do when you can’t help the patron, etc.
