Do you remember coming to the Family History Library or the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and looking at rows and rows of black binders filled with family group sheets? The largest section of those collections can be found on your computer. The Family Group Record Collection - Archive Section have been scanned and are found on the Historical Records. This is so exciting to find the families that were turned in by our grandparents from 1942 to 1969. The majority of the family group records go back many generations and end prior to the 1500's. These are the names turned in for temple ordinances by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
For years these sheets were kept in Salt Lake City in the library. If you wanted a copy, you could submit an old request form for a TIB (Temple Index Bureau) and Archive Sheet. In 1973 the Genealogical library began filming the sheets. You could order the films, but it would take time to look at the films and for a whole family you may need quite a few films for all the different names.
But now you may view the sheets on Family Search. Since the sheets are in alphabetical order by family name then by head of the family, it doesn't take to many clicks to locate the correct family group records. You will need to be signed on to FamilySearch.org to view the records.
