Findmypast.com specializes in British (U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand) family history research. If you have a family tree on the FamilySearch website and want to create a tree in findmypast.com with the data from your Family Tree, you can do so quite easily. To do so, go to the findmypast homepage and hover your cursor over the My Family Tree tab on the top navigation menu. You will be able to see the options available to you. Select Create a tree.
You will be taken to the Create a tree screen where you can start a tree from scratch or import an existing tree you have created in another program.
To import a tree you have already created, click Import a tree. You will need a GEDCOM file that you have saved in/exported from the family history software program (such as AncestralQuest, FamilyTreeMaker, etc.) that you used to record your family history data. NOTE: Your FamilySearchFamily Tree does not generate GEDCOM files, but will allow you to import them from other programs.
FYI – GEDCOM stands for “Genealogical Data Communication” and is a type of file that allows many different software programs to read/exchange the family data you have input. You will need access to the GEDCOM file of your choice previously saved on your device.Select Choose file and within your folder structure navigate to the folder that contains your desired GEDCOM, highlight the desired file, click Choose, and then click the Upload button to import the file. You will be asked to name the tree to be created from your GEDCOM file.Once imported, your new tree will now appear by name in the My Family Tree drop down menu.
You can view your tree in several different formats. Here is the pedigree view:
You can also select other useful ways to view your family tree data, depending on what you are trying to do, by clicking on the view button and choosing one of the following options from the drop down menu:
- Family View shows one person’s descendancy.
- Pedigree view shows one person’s ancestors.
- Family Group shows one person’s immediate family with spouse and children.
- Profile shows the selected person’s in-depth details
