Indexers devote a lot of time and energy to make records searchable. Much of their work happens quietly as they diligently work to “fuel the find.” Many do it with very little thanks.
Just like you and me, indexers like to be appreciated and see the difference they are making. They like to know how they fit into the big picture of family history. Below are a few suggestions that you can start using right away to help your indexers feel good about the work they are doing. Perhaps your words to them will even come at a much needed point in their lives.
- If you produce a newsletter or bulletin, spotlight one or more volunteers and their efforts.
- Under direction of priesthood leaders, hold an indexing social or potluck.
- Meet regularly with indexers to train and encourage them and take the opportunity to thank them individually.
- Show them the fruits of their labors by helping them find family members to take to the temple using descendancy research using hints.
- Make a phone call just to say “thank you” and ask what you can do to help them.
- Send a personalized email or letter. Here is some example text you could use or modify if you would like to:
“I want to personally thank you for your indexing (or arbitration) efforts. What you are doing is helping members find their family names to take to the temple. Thank you!
What, if anything, can I do to help you in your efforts?”
Thank you for your dedicated service. We realize that your efforts are essential in helping members find their ancestors and do their temple work.
