The University of Utah Marriott Library has wonderful collections useful to family historians. Some are available online, while others must be used at the library. These collections include photos, letters, diaries, correspondence, and newspapers. These are great ways to learn more about ancestors and add life to family history.
*Digital Collections has more than 100 digital collections with books, photographs, maps, etc., with links to the Utah Digital Newspapers and USpace Institutional Repository.
*Utah Digital Newspapers from as early as 1871 to 1982. The dates vary by newspapers. More issues are continually added.
*USpace Institutional Repository
- Theses & Dissertations - some are biographies
- Scholar Works - some are historical works
- Electronic University Archive – includes lists of past U of U students & faculty
*Government Documents has U.S. federal government documents back to 1893, since the Marriott Library has been a federal depository since that time. The library is also a Utah state depository and has many historical Utah government documents. The documents have not been digitized, but may be used at the library.
*Manuscripts Collection has more than 1,600 unpublished collections with detailed finding aids. Some of the collections are diaries, autobiographies, and personal papers. The catalog is online, but the records must be used at the library.
*Mountain West Digital Library allows free access to digital collections from many universities, libraries, museums, societies, and archives in Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Hawaii. The collections include many wonderful books, photos, and documents.
*Special Collections has rare books, magazines, films, documents, etc. that require special care. The focus is on Utah, Mormons, and the West, but also has a lot for the Middle East and the University of Utah. Much of the collection is accessible online, including many indexes and guides. The non-digitized items are available at the library. Librarians are available in the Special Collections area to help users Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturdays 9:15 am to 6:00 pm.
