Today I came across a post in the Transitional Genealogists' Forum called "Curse of the Community." The post began "Recently I gained access via FamilySearch" ...
I thought to myself, "Oh no, another guy griping about how the public can change his data in Family Tree." Luckily, I was wrong. The author Leon Zimlich found the phrase "curse of the community" in a FamilySearch online historical document.
In his ancestor's will in Louisville, Kentucky, dated 1885, after instructing his wife to provide for his children after his death, he stated she was to have:
...authority in her to require them and each of them to perform such labor as she may demand of them, it being my desire that my children during their minority shall be brought up to freegal and industrious habits regarding idleness, as I do, as the curse of the community. (emphasis added)
Has anyone come across the phrase "curse of the community?" Zimlich would love to know its meaning.
