A copy of the probate record book (with an index), v. 1, 1789-1833, is held at the Public Archives of Canada (no. M.G. 9, D 14, 8). A filmed copy of that record book is found in the Family History Library catalog under the title: Libr. A, register of Surrogate Court for Eastern District of Province of Upper Canada.

The Eastern District originally covered the present-day Ontario counties of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Leeds, Grenville, Prescott, Carleton, Russell, Wentworth and Halton. Johnstown District, covering the counties of Leeds, Grenville and part of Carleton, was formed from part of the Eastern District in 1798. In 1849, the judicial districts were abolished and the counties took over their functions. Johnstown District was absorbed by the counties of Leeds and Grenville.

Consists of probate record books (v. 2-4 include indexes) and the original probate estate papers.
