The Piedmont Historical Society was founded in 1978 and chartered in 1981.

The piedmont region (upper South Carolina) consists of these counties: Oconee, Pickens, Greenville, Spartanburg, Cherokee, York, Union, Chester, Anderson, Laurens, Abbeville, Greenwood, Newberry, and McCormick.

The Piedmont Historical Society's purpose is to collect, preserve, and publish historical and genealogical records of the piedmont region and other areas of South Carolina.
