The Family History Library Services area on the main floor offers several media conversions, including digitizing old VHS, mini videotapes, and cassette tapes into digital format. These services take time, so you will need to leave your movies with us temporarily; the movies will be returned once the media conversion has been completed.
We can also transfer or help you transfer old technology like 5 ¼ inch soft floppy disks and 3 ½ inch hard floppy disks. We can help you open old PAF 2.31 data or backup files to create usable GEDCOM files and help you move them into FamilySearch Family Tree. We also have a Macintosh computer to help save data from old disks.
How to prepare for media drop-off:
- Fill out the following information on paper and bring with you when you come in: Full name and contact information (email and phone number).
- Bring a flash drive or external hard drive to store the converted media on. Make sure the drive contains a least 128 GB space.
After media has been digitized, we will keep the old physical media for one month before disposing of it. If you have any questions about media conversion email mediaconversion@familysearch.org.
Service missionaries are available to help you learn to digitize 8mm film on the second floor. You will need to stay with your film for the duration of the digitizing process.
