1850:  Oregon Territory census.

1860 United States Census—A free Internet index and images to the 1860 United States Census can be viewed on the FamilySearch Record Search – Pilot Site. This index includes every name listed on the census and is linked to an image including information about each person’s residence and age in 1860, birthplace, occupation, other family members, whether married or single, and neighbors


1870 United States Territorial Census---A free internet index and images can be viewed on FamilySearch Record Pilot site. This index includes the full name, age, sex, race, birthplace, occupation, month if born in census year, month if married in census year, birth place of father and mother, if born in a foreign country.

1890:  Census destroyed.

1900 Federal Census - A free Internet index and images to the 1900 United States Census can be viewed on the  FamilySearch Record Search – Pilot Site. Important additions to this census are month and year of birth of each household member, number of years married for each married person, number of children born to each mother and the number of those still living, year of immigration, and number of years in the United States.

1900-1930:  Washington State.

Historical Background

1848:  The Oregon Territory was created.  It included what is now Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and parts of Montana and Wyoming.

1853:  Washington Territory was created from the northern part of Oregon Territory.

1859:  Oregon became a state. Washington Territory was enlarged to include the remaining Oregon territory not included in the new state.

1863:  The Idaho Territory was created from lands in eastern Washington Territory.

1889: Washington became a state.

1860, 1870, 1880:  Indexes in book and microfiche format are available.


1880, 1900, 1920, 1930:  A soundex (phonetic) index is available on microfilm for part of the 1880 and all of the 1900, 1920 and 1930 censuses.

1910:  The Family History Library has a street index for Seattle. (Family History Library fiche 6331481)

Special Censuses

Mortality Schedules

1850-1880:  Mortality schedules exist for Washington (as part of Oregon Territory), censuses. The mortality schedules for 1860 to 1880 are available at the DAR library in Washington D.C. and at the Washington State Library. The Family History Library has copies of the 1860, 1870, and 1880 mortality schedules.

State Censuses

State censuses also exist for a few counties of Washington for various years. These generally include heads of households only. These partial censuses are available at the Washington State Library and the Family History Library (beginning with Family History Library film 1841781).  The years included:

1854, 1857, 1861, 1871, 1875, 1877-1879, 1881, 1883, 1885, 1887, 1890-1892, 1907.
