Wasco county was created from Clackamas, Douglas, Jackson, Lane, Linn, and Marion  Counties 11 January 1854. Named for the Wasco, a Chinook tribe on the south side. Parts taken for Baker 1862, Crook 1882, Gilliam 1885, Grant 1864, Hood River 1908, Lake 1874, Sherman 1889 and Umatilla 1862, counties

The county seat is The Dalles.
