Moderator Discussion

Hi Janell - just saw your note about the discussion on the Moderator talk page - Great idea about using the forum for discussion. --Aberksan 12:15, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject to improve help content

Just wanted to make you aware of a page that was create a while back to help track the improvement of the help content. I found the page linked to one of the basic help page, the overview maybe, and removed the link because the content on this page didn't apply. Anyway the page name is now FamilySearch Wiki:WikiProject Topics needed by new wiki contributors and you can take it from here. If the page is not needed, so ahead and delete it. If you can use it for something, feel free. --Fran 05:46, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Wiki Tour  Changes

Janell- I do like what your sandbox shows, help me understand the statement though "reword to take away the idea that you need help from communty members."

Because there is so much in the wiki, as an example when one gets on search and types 'youth' it brings up so much material I don't like to limit the wiki in saying "HOW TO..." because I am afraid searchers will not realize how much is there does that make sense? what about something more encompassing like

  • Learning and reaching out doing Family History

I don't think it should be called genealogy but rather family history  I think President Packer wants us to be consistent in Family History because it is so much more. what do you feel?

thanks for all you do,

Dawne, great question - I think you're referring to my comments on the Tour Discussion page? I think that the Tour page as it currently stands is all about "how to get help" rather than what the wiki is about. That gives users the idea that the wiki is so hard, you need help to use it. People shouldn't feel they need help just to use the wiki, though some will. So my thought is that we should mention how to get help, but not make that the central message of the page, if that makes sense?
Did you get a chance to look at the mock-up here?
This went on a slightly different angle than my comments did; take a look at that page and see what you think, and feel free to edit! --janellv 23:22, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

User Pages Forum Thread

Hi Janell,

I'd love to hear your thoughts about the importance of user pages!  Can you take a minute and add your thoughts on the Forum thread I've started?  Lise 02:16, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks Back to you

Janell, thank you for the kind words, and for the 4-tilda trick. You yourself are making amazing contributions for which smiles and thanks are due many times over. My recent input sticks out on the Forum because there is so little traffic there. I only learned of its existence more or less accidentally via a post last fall on the 'getsatisfaction' message board. Kind regards, Jade 18:57, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Thank you

Question about an article

I want to start working in the maintenance and I read about this article,_South_Carolinad#this_page_is_an_incomplete_duplicate_of_Populated_Places:_Greenwood_county.2C_South_Carolina

are we going to delete it? I agree it just doesn't follow along the path of the other articles in the way it's set up also you mentioned there is already a duplicate article. Please advise me as to what to do. Hey, I found the sites spell check, it's in the wikitext.

Thanks --Utahnancy 03:54, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for helping out! Yes, we will want to delete it - looks like it's already been done. To take care of it they added the {{delete}} template to the main page. So that's ok. Tell me, what kind of maintenance work would you like to do in the wiki? I just saw the other day that you had signed up to help, that is great! janellv 15:24, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

I was trying to figure out how to un-hide a category, there are some to be fixed. I read the instructions but it's not clear to me.

Thank you

--Utahnancy 02:13, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Which category do you want to unhide? Most of the maintenance categories are hidden on purpose, and we want them to be, because they don't relate to doing genealogy research. I'll go see what the instructions say. janellv 17:17, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Janellv, thank you for getting back to me but Dsammy has told me leave those alone so that's what I will do. I guess they are suppose to be hidden.

--Utahnancy 20:00, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Ok. Let me get your information to someone else who can help orient you into some of the things that we are working on, we would be excited to bring you in and have you help out in some other areas! janellv 20:49, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Unsigned template

Hi Janell, I noticed that you had substituted a template {{unsigned}} that was not in the Research Wiki. I have now set this up and used it to add signatures to the comments left on Help talk:Boolean Searches in the Wiki --Steve (talk | contribs) 06:47, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Oops, thanks for doing that! I had found some instructions on it in the help talk pages article but didn't realize it wasn't really part of our wiki, and then didn't check what it looked like after I tried to use it, duh.......  -- janellv (talk | contribs) 14:28, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Geograph Template

Hi Janell, I've been told about some feedback recieved from support with regard to uploading images from the website Geograph. As many of the images being added to English parishes are being sourced from Geograph, I created a new template {{Geograph}} which is a custom version of {{Information}}, following a pattern used in WikiMedia Commons where they have a template for images from Flickr. Unfortunately when this template has been used, Support wrote back about needing to use {{Information}} (see User talk:Cottrells#Geograph_Template). Are you able to let the right people know that this template is OK to use when uploading images. BTW I have also created {{Flickr}} so that can be used too. --Steve (talk | contribs) 09:25, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks Steve, I let everyone know on this in our meeting yesterday, just forgot to finish this comment. Should this be added to the uploading images help document? If other additional templates similar to this are created in the future, could you let us know? Thanks. -- janellv (talk| contribs) 18:58, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for you help with this issue Janell. When I created the template I did not anticipate that it would be a problem to use it, but I can now see that if reviewers had been instructed to use the {{information}} template how it may have confused them when people used a different template. I have added links to these related templates on the description page for {{information}}, but it would be a good idea to refer to alternatives on Help:Uploading images and files and also some details about these template on Help:Submitting images for approval. Longer term the form used by users submitting images could be changed to help better document source, attribution and license information for images. --Steve (talk| contribs) 07:33, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
