Trying tabbed format

Hi, Charles, thank you for being so willing to share and to experiment. The

code worked well for putting the right nav bar down, but now how do I extent the space. I'm sure it is with a
code. Do I set it at 100% or 130% or what? User:AdkinsWH/Sandbox Co format Thanks, Wilma AdkinsWH 22:33, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
Aaahhh! Now I see! Thanks Charles. AdkinsWH 19:01, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

Clickable Maps

Thank you for your suggestions! Much appreciated. joy

Hi Charles,

Wilma Adkins suggested that I contact you in regards to creating clickable map. I am comfortable creating the actual clickable map; however, getting the map ready to be put into the wiki - preparing the image is very time consuming. Please see Pacific County, Washington and the Neighboring Counties map.

I use PowerPoint to prepare the counties which gives multiple counties in other states. Is there an easier way?

My phone number here in SLC is 1-801-240-1491[[Image:]]1-801-240-1491 Talk page wyzer17 email jbogar@familysearch.org

Thank you in advance for your advice or suggestions.

China Genealogies Headers

Charles,

Thank you for your interest in the China, Collection of Genealogies (FamilySearch Historical Records) article.

I'm a little fuzzy on why you changed the header sizes in the article. Are you talking about having problems when we place text next to the image?

Prior to the great gallery push we placed text next to images, but I don't believe we do now.

If you could explain a little more and maybe give me an example, then we can decide whether to change the header types for all of the Historical Records articles.

Please contact me prior to making a format change to a single HR article article that will or could affect the oithers, could you make me aware of your suggestion so we can standardize the articles, if necessary.

Thanks,

9th Virginia

Hi Charles, Thanks for the info on the 9th Virginia. Marilyn Markham created the page you reference. We can take a look at it. All the best, Murphynw 23:52, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

I got it fixed. Thanks Charles! 9th Regiment, Virginia Cavalry (Confederate) Murphynw 17:39, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Wiki Design

Charles, when I deleted the image the search box turned into text. Can you fix this? In addition, per Janell's request, would you insert the search box after the image.

Thanks for your help.

Welcome...

Los Angeles Family History Library

Hi there Ccsmith, I changed the library menu template back to show Mon,Fri,Sat 9 to 5 from your edit Mon - Fri. We are not open the same hours throughout the week. The listing was correct that you changed. We appreciate your concern. It would be more helpful in the future if you let us know what you want us to change on our site, so our Wiki people can work it in if the Library Director approves you input.

Thanks so much,

Warren Daniel, Los Angeles Family History Library WIKI trainer, for the Library Director

Virginia parishes

Sorry Elder Smith. I'll fix these Virginia parish categories. I've been doing it piecemeal and will need to figure out which counties each parish serves. Should have it done by the end of the week. Murphynw 17:55, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Montgomery County, Kentucky Navbox

Hi Charles,

Jimmy suggested that I leave you a note about your work on the Montgomery County, Kentucky page. I see that you have successfully created a county navbox. At the moment you've added the code for the navbox directly to the page, which is OK, but if you wanted to use the navbox on many pages, the way to do this is to create the navbox in the "Template" namespace. If you are new to the wiki this will be new to you, but I'm willing to guide you through the process. --Steve 21:14, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Blanking out pages

Hi, I'm Dorothy Horan. I work with the pages that describe digital collections published in fsbeta.I've notified that you have blanked out redirects from some articles in the wiki, including ones that we created. When that happens, the wiki users are led to a blank page which might lead them to believe that there isn't another article available to give them that data.

What we need to do with those pages is to mark them for deletion. The redirects are supposed to be temporary until someone who deletes pages can delete the non-essential pages.

Thanks for helping out! Let me know if you have any questions. -- Horandm 30 November 2010.

Categories for US Military categories

Hi Charles, I have today amended some categories relating to US military categories (for example Category:Illinois - Military). I noticed that many of these categories had themselves as the category, resulting in a category loop. The change I've made is to have them added to two category, 1) relating to the state and 2) relating to US State Military Records. I've sorted the state category with the word Military and the US State Military Records with the name of the state. I hope you see the logic behind this change. --Steve 12:55, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Categories for Civil War Pages

We appreciate your willingness to try to improve the Wiki. We have a team that is creating pages for the Civil War regiments for 33 states. Most pages are not done, so please don't change anything yet. Please contact me before changing anything.

Would you please change all categories of the Ohio in the Civil War pages back to what they were? I really do want Ohio - Military - Civil War, 1861-1865, NOT Ohio - Military. The same for the Arkansas in the Civil War pages. The categories have not be made yet, but I'll do it soon. Thank you, Marilyn

Hello!

Dear FamilySearch Historical Records Contributor,

We noticed you recently contributed to one of our articles and we wanted to send out a quick thank you for contributing to a FamilySearch Historical Records' article. You may not know it, but this is a new project that is just getting off the ground and your contribution helps! The information you provide is invaluable to those users who are searching out further information about collections in FamilySearch; it helps them make a deeper connection with their research, especially when it has to do with their own ancestry. It’s your contributions that are keeping the project rolling forward. Thank you.

We'd love to have you become part of our community here. We've got lots of ways to get involved a little deeper into the project and what the project entails: https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/FamilySearch_Wiki:WikiProject_FamilySearch_Records. In this page you will find information about the FamilySearch Records project, getting started in wiki editing, tasks for which you can sign up to volunteer, etc. We are excited you have decided to share your talents, time and resources towards forwarding the goals of FamilySearch.org and those who use it (including you!).

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. We’d love to hear from you and help you out in any way we can.

Sincerely,

The FamilySearch Records Team

FamilySearch Centres

Spelling

Henry995 You have created FamilySearch Centre pages for Britain with Americanised spelling of the word Centre (Center) may I suggest that you edit these to the correct English spelling throughout the page(s) as Americanised spellings are not popular outside the USA/Canada.

I agree with Henry, English users would not search for a family history center but a family history centre. Also do we need to have the word England in the title? Yes with these are the official names, but they are not the common names that patrons would search for. Finally the Isle of Wight is part of England so doesn't need it's own category. --Steve 07:12, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi Charles, I see that you created the page FamilySearch Wiki:Family History Centers Naming and Content. I have added a proposed style guide regarding this issue to that page. --Steve 08:01, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Stubs

Hi Charles, just to let you know that I have created a new stub template {{FHC-stub}} to indentify FHC articles that need filling out with detail. I have included in the stub template a link to the instructions and guidelines for FHC and so I have replace the current code for this link with the template. Once a page has been edited with the details of the center then the stub template can be removed. Until then each article in addition to being categorised by with the other FHC in the same state/country they will be be found in Category:Family History Center stubs. --Steve 12:11, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Jersey Family History Centre

Hi Charles, I see that you have renamed the Jersey Family History Centre to add the city name. However as I explained on the talk page, it is only named this within the LDS Church. As the wiki is written with a general point of view, I think it is important that articles are named using terms that are most common, ie those that will be used by most people to find them. --Steve 07:07, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

North Bend FHC

Good Morning Charles, I'm Sister Heaston and I'm helping on the Wiki team with Wilma Adkins and the Bogars.

I've been putting the information for the Family History Centers in each county. I've run into a problem with the North Bend Family History Center.

It isn't listed in the FHC Profile Database or the US Centers programs. You probably know what these programs are and they keep them updated. I talked to the people who work in these programs and we can't find this FHC.

Could you let me know where you got this information and I will talk to Mark Summerhays and let him know. Thank you really appreciate all the work you have done over the years.

Spanish and Portuguese content in the English wiki

Hi Charles, I noticed that today you have created {{FHC-stub Spanish}} template, and previously the {{FHC page outline Spanish}} and {{FHC page outline Portuguese}} templates. These template belong in either the Spanish or Portuguese Wikis and not in the English language wiki. There is a template {{H-langs}} that can be used to link an English article to the article on the same subject in the other wikis. Content in the English wiki should always be in English. --Steve

Edits to {{FHCpage}}

Hi Charles, please review the comments I have added to the Template talk:FHCpage. I would welcome your feedback. --Steve 05:30, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Baker City FHC

This might surprise you. I'm native of Baker City, Oregon. FamilySearch continues to use "Baker" instead of "Baker City" despite the fact the locals do not refer to Baker at all since at least 1985. Even the wards there are referred to as Baker City First Ward and Baker City Second Ward and officially as such in meetinghouse locator directory. They are not going to look for Baker Oregon FHC, they're looking for Baker City, Oregon FHC. Dsammy 17:13, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

There is a workaround solution to this. actual page stays and masked Baker Oregon... and type |Baker City Oregon Family History Center. Search engine pick up this one, and nobody the wise to it. Dsammy 19:24, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

File:Downloaded6243127676072404131 Family+history+Center+map.png missing description details

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:Downloaded6243127676072404131 Family+history+Center+map.png is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers.

If the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

If you have any questions please see Image use. Thank you. --Steve (talk| contribs) 18:39, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Chiang Mai Thailand Family History Center

Charles-

I note that you started the beginning edits on this Family History Center. Since your first two edits it has been edited by a person named " Anupong". Two questions do you know "Anpong" or who this person is? And why is the Family History Center named after this family Chiang Mai in Thailand? Translation template

Hi Charles, following the technical meeting today, I have uploaded a new image File:Ambox translate.png and used this to illustrate a new template {{translation needed}}. I have written some documentation and added some examples. I'm thinking of a way to include a link to where the translated text needs to go, but feel free to let me have any comments on the image and template as they are now. --Steve (talk| contribs) 23:21, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

RecordSearch Template

Hi, I noticed that you created the template "RecordSearch" on the Spanish Wiki. I already created the same template with instructions in Spanish last week but named it "BuscarColección". Since there should only be one copy of each template I redirected "RecordSearch" to "BuscarColección". Hope this OK with you.

The templates are exactly the same except for the name. Using either "RecordSearch" or "BuscarColección" will now work. -- Lotje2 23:36, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

FamilySearch Collection Template

Hi, I noticed you were having a problem with the "FamilySearch Collection" template when you moved it over to the Spanish wiki. I'm guessing that the problem was that some of the headers for the pages you copied to your sandbox weren't working. You were very close in tracking down the problem. Many of the older FamilySearch Historical Records pages use the old template "Record Search article" that redirects to the "FamilySearch Collection" template. So that template needed to be created on the Spanish wiki and redirected as well. I did this and restored the code for the "FamilySearch Collection" template. I think it will work correctly now if you copy and paste the headers from the English wiki. I also updated the categories in the code so all FamilySearch Historical Records Collections moved to the Spanish wiki will automatically categorize into Categoría:Registros Históricos de FamilySearch under the name of the country that is in the location= section of the FamilySearch Collection template. Known Issues pages

I recently copied the {{HR Known Issues}} template to the Spanish wiki and translated it so that "FamilySearch Historical Records" pages that have a "Known Issues" section and {{HR Known Issues}} flag can be duplicated on the Spanish wiki and will display the flag and link correctly. The template creates a link to the "Known Issues" sub-page for the collection.

I also copied and translated the {{HR Known Issues-page}} header, so that the "Known Issues" pages themselves can be translated and display the header correctly. The templates have the same names as on the English wiki. Lotje2 01:41, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Help pages

I noticed you were working on translating some of the help pages into Spanish on the English wiki. I copied the templates needed to create pages with "tabs" to the Spanish wiki. This should make it possible for you to move the pages to the Spanish wiki and have them display properly. Lotje2 19:06, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Projects

I noticed that you appeared to be running the equivalent of several WikiProjects out of your sandboxes. I created a few WikiProject project workspaces on the Spanish Wiki that you can use. You don't have to use them of course, I created them mainly to see if the tabs template and userbox templates were working correctly. If you do choose to use them however, change them however you'd like, they are all yours. I just set them up basically as examples of what can be done. If you don't need them you can mark them for deletion.

Note about tabs on the Spanish wiki: Please notice that I used the Lengüeta templates to create the project workspaces which is different than the Start tab and End tab's used on some of the help pages. Both templates are on the Spanish wiki but the Lengüeta one is more simple.

As I mentioned above, there are userboxes as well, you can now use the meta-template Userbox to create userboxes. Lotje2 18:15, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Maine county pages

The reason I changed the width of the page to 100% is so that when the boxes (Research, Volunteer, etc) on the right are extended they will not cover up the image of the county map. Not everyone will have these boxes in their up position. We could widen the text below these extended boxes for the rest of the material on the page, however. Ccsmith 23:54, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

I've walked in your shoes before--I've done the same kind of edits for exactly the same reason on many a Wiki page. Normally, it is the right choice. However, in these cases I consciously chose to risk having the maps covered up because of a problem unique to "clickable" maps. When a header (Level 1, level 2, level 3, etc.) is positioned to the side of a "clickable" map, the clickability near that header is nullified by a bug in the Wiki. This is a bad thing--worse than covered maps which can be fixed by closing some optional and easy-to-close boxes. The best way to address all the layout problems around these maps, and the least-bad choice, is to risk having covered maps. I'm also trying to keep as much of the geographical data within sight of the map as possible. In time I hope that the pages above the map will be lengthened by additional contributions which put the clickable map beyond the reach of overlapping boxes. Outside of these Maine counties, I completely agree with you. Normally, the page width should only be expanded in such a way so that images and maps appear below the space which is (or could be) occupied by all the open boxes. These Maine counties are just a weird exception. DiltsGD 22:28, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Categories

I noticed you changed categories for Czech Republic, Croatia, Ukraine etc from the country name to Europe. Is that a new direction to have home pages categorized under Europe instead of the country name? Why? Thank you. Pysnaks 18:13, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Topics Added

You added several new topics to the Denmark Wiki page. Many of these topics do not even exist in Denmark (for example, there are no such thing as naturalization records in Denmark), some are ok. If you were under a directive to add on these new topics please let me know, otherwise I will need to remove some of these topics. Due to cultural reasons, many native Danes that use the wiki page will be highly offended that "American" topics were added. Thank you for your cooperation. Davidsonnd 08:59, 15 October 2013

Romania Portal Page

Hi. I have been working to develop the Romania pages for about six months. As noted with some of the previous comments, I am somewhat confused by your recent revisions to the Romania Portal Page. You listed your edits as minor but they have a major impact on the site. First, I noticed, like the Czech Republic, the category is now listed as Europe and not Romania. Is there a reason for this change? The countries of Europe vary a great deal in their genealogical resources. Second, some of the categories do not seem relevant to Romania or family history. For example, I am not sure what is meant by "Church directories". To my knowledge, Romanian churches do not keep membership directories. Also, the "Dwellings" and "Social Customs" may be nice information, but do not relate to family history. Information on these matters can be accessed in Wikipedia or some similar source. Third, are there any plans to acrually provide information on these topics? Such a long list seems to clutter the page. I am trying to keep the page simple so it can be readily understood by the Romanian members and easily translated to Romanian. Fourth, in adding the additional topics, several page with family history information have been removed from access, including the list of family history records available in Romania, and pages dedicated to citizenship records, guardianship records, guild records, military records, and probate records. The records in the summary are those supplied by the National Archive of Romania to the Family History Department. Am I supposed to re-add these pages? Can we also remove the irrelevant topics. I am trying to prepare the site for training branch members in family history. The first training will be held at the end of this month. Thanks for your help.

Bill Green

Dear Bill You didn't leave me an e-mail address to get back to you, so I will post my response hoping you will read this. I am excited to see folks working on the European pages. Let me go over each of your questions: First: Categories are for putting items in a classification order. For instance, Poodle goes in the Dog Category not the Poodle Category. Now “Romania Birth Records” would go into the Romania Category not in a category of the same name. Likewise, Romania is in theCategory: Europe because it is part of Europe. Second: Yes some of the items under “Topics” may not be useful. This is a template I use for all of Europe. I thought it easier to delete items rather than to add them. Click on the title “Topics” and it will tell you how to delete or add stuff to the sidebar. Third: We want to add material to the red links and are looking for folks to do so. We are always looking for help to add content to these pages. Again if an item is useless, delete it. Fourth: Yes please re-add these links to the items in red under topics. Again, you are free to edit the page as you think best. If you want to streamline the topics, feel free to do so. Click on the headers on the sidebars for instructions to how to edit the individual sections. Hope this helps and if there is anything I can do to help you, please let me know. Charles.............

China, Collection of Genealogies

Ccsmith, thanks for watching the China, Collection of Genealogies (FamilySearch Historical Records) article. I think we'll just get rid of the hyperlink, since it looks like every time someone makes an edit an 'amp;' gets added.

Also, we have our major section headers set at level one, the '==' level, for good article layout and coordination. I noticed you changed all the headers to the level 2, the '===' level. If you could revert that change so the headers are at level one (and the others are at level 2), once that's done I'll fix the citation so the hyperlink is no longer present.

Washington County, Ohio

Charles, Thanks for jazzing up the table on the Washington County, Ohio Courthouse page. The folks that wanted to put that up really like what you did with it! All the best, Murphynw 19:40, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Topics Added

You added several new topics to the Czech Republic home wiki page and many of these topics do not pertain to the Czech Republic. Some could apply. However, in the process you lost links to several important topics which I will now have to restore. I noticed that you did the same thing on other Easter European countries. If you were under a directive to add onto these new topics please let me know, otherwise I will need to remove what does not apply. Also, what do you think? Does not the bar look scary with all these red links? That is why I left it originally in black and not linked. Please be careful not to lose links to already existing information. Thank you so very much. Thank you for your cooperation. Pysnaks 21:27, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Transclusion code issues.

Hello Charles, I got your name from Linda Chappell,

I am working in my sandbox on a project called HelpCentral and have run into a coding issue I cannot resolve or the coding cannot do what I am requesting. I want to transcluded the “last revision” date of a page (Page 1 below) to display in a table cell on Page 2 (coding below). I noticed it was not behaving correctly and at first thought it was a timing issue with the UTC dates being different from US central time as the day was one date later.   Just recently I think I determined the real problem which appears to be that the displayed “last revision” date is the last revision date for page 2 (even though I am transcluding from page 1).   I tested it by re-saving page 2 and the display instantly changed to the current date.   I confirmed this by adding the REVISIONTIMESTAMP code and it is indeed NOT transcluding from page 1 but is displaying the last revision date of the current page.

Do I have the coding wrong or is it behaving as it should and therefore it cannot do what I need it to do? If the latter is the case, do you have any alternative suggestions.

Notes to users:

Information common to all languages is listed first in the form of screen display "images" and "links" to videos and articles. From there one can access the various languages using the Table of Contents or the selection box above the images.

The language sections contain information in the form of keyword descriptions, links to related keywords, and frequently asked questions.

If you cannot find the answer you are looking for, you should post your question at the GetSatisfaction website (English only).   Once you have found your answer it would be appreciated if you would add that information back here for others to access.

The Editor's Box (outlined in red) is for maintenance purposes only. You do not need to be concerned with that area unless you wish to edit this page.

Notes to editors:

When filling in the informations such as descriptions, definitions, purpose, and how to use, please keep the information short and concise in this section. If more detailed information is required or desire then provide a link to the more extensive article, possibly by creating a specific article on the wiki (for example, "Various ways to use the Source Box").

The information from the Frequently Asked Questions section will also be copied over to the Frequently Asked Questions section in "The Collection" area. The actual questions and answers for this section will be entered using a template. There should be a "return to this keyword page" link on each template to return you to this original page after editing is complete.

The "Editor's Box" is a part of the HelpCentral maintenance system which can be monitored from a centralized page to ensure that all the information on all the pages has been entered and that the information on each page remains up to date. The initial statement in this box (This page is currently BLANK) should be replaced by an updated status once information has been added to the page. For example: "This page has no video links added", or "some FAQs should be added to this page", and so on. Never add the words "Done or Finished" as the pages will always need updating (instead, add the statement "This page is up to date as of dd/mm/yyyy)".

To view the "Editor's Box" maintenance page you can click on the "Maintenance" link on all pages or go to the appropriate multi-lingual page listed at the bottom of the pages. Your help in making this maintenance system function properly will be greatly appreciated.

Objective notes:

Top of page

Translations were done using Google Translate so please make adjustments and corrections as necessary.

Note: Condense the following to the bare minimum and translate before making actual pages.

The objective is to achieve a multi-ligual system wherein the keyword index list contained on "The Index" page can be copied to a template page where it can be translated and re-sorted alphabetically (after  re-sorting alphabetically the links will have to be re-established unless it is done in wikitext wherein they could be copy and pasted in the right order).  The translated template (with their original links) will then be linked back to "The Index" page via transclusion.   Searching in any language will therefore be directed back to the same keyword pages which will contain the images (screen shots), the links to external information (Videos, Reference guide), and the links to internal wiki articles.  Those links will reference if alternative language versions are available and provide a link to the correct language.

The keyword pages will also be broken down into language groups which provide a general description, user notes, and editor's notes.  Within each language grouping there will also be two templates included, the first of which will be the FAQs table that will also be transcluded via the template to "The Collections" page;  the collections page can then be set up with multi-lingual FAQs sections.  The second template will be the Editor's Box which will be part one of the maintenance function wherein the templates for each language can be directed to the maintenance pages so each language can be monitored as to the status of the information on all the pages based on the editors box information.  Part two of the maintence function will be appropriate language pages listing the links to all the keyword pages (and their associated templates)  at a central point so the entire keyword page can be accessed and monitored as necessary.

Other pages in the HelpCentral network can either be translated in the conventional way or can use similar side by side language information as depicted on the keyword pages.

The collection of all the Editor's box information will also function as an aid for contributors to quickly determine which pages need further information or updating, again, based on the information provided by the last contributor to the specified page.

Note: By using several templates the page size for each keyword page should remain acceptable even with up to ten languages being represented on each page.  "The Index" page will also use templates for each keyword index list and "The Collection" page will also benifit by keeping the templates separate from the main page itself.

PS remember to set up each keyword template page with a "Back to this page" link to return the contributor back to the correct keyword page after editing the templates.
