Surrey Copyright content

The text in each page of the entire county of Surrey (England) is text which found on a copyrighted site called British History Online. Gazetteer entries may also be available in facsimile books published in UK in recent years. For this reason if you refer to use of gazeteer material online it is preferable to link to the British History Online site or to offer a transcription of relevant information. In some cases the gazetteer entry is very large and much is unrelated to " parish history". This use of text by Family History Library staff or volunteers has been permitted although it is use of copyright material. Visit any Sussex or Kent page content to see alternative parish history which does not infringe copyright.

There is also copyright gazeteer text available at Vision of Britain; this is fairly easy to spot as it contains the words

"In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described (placename) like this:"
followed by a gazetteer entry. Sometimes the year and Gazetteer author will be different but can be searched on the site.

Both of these sites are university funded academic research sites which are transcribing material from various sources for the online community and claim copyright for their work.

May I also point out that the 4 tilde system does not always enter the FamilySearch version of the wiki due to the technical failure to accept edits which UK contributors have to cope with daily; I am familiar with the system but if it is not working on some edits it is for that reason that you do not see it. Hi Lynda, you emailed me about creating a Wiki Support Team Userbox. I have made one called {{User Wiki Support Team}}. Instructions are included on the template page, but to use it you just need to add the template code to the User page of the person in question. --Steve (talk| contribs) 12:48, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
