Brief History

The original name of Plymouth was Saltash, under a charter granted by Gov. Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire on July 6, 1761. It wasn't until Feb. 23, 1797 that an act of the legislature changed the name to Plymouth.

Plymouth is the town where Calvin Coolidge , the 30th President of the United States, was born in and is also buried here.

Plymouth is principally noted for its gold diggings, and the purity of the ore exceeding that generally found in California. Plymouth Five Corners and an area northeast of Tyson were the scenes of extensive gold mining operations, following the discovery of the mineral around 1857. After a time the projects were abandoned and the town of Five Corners had nothing at all but cellar holes and a cemetery to show for all the mining activity. [1][2]
