The Milwaukee Sentinel newspaper is accessible to genealogical researchers in two ways:
- The Milwaukee Public Library has an excellent card file index to death notices, obituaries, marriages and other events mentioned in the Milwaukee Sentinel newspaper from 1837-1890.
The card index is not available online. Contact the library’s Periodicals Department and ask for a librarian to check the index card file. If an obituary or mention of a marriage or other event exists, you can then request a copy of that newspaper article through the library’s Ditto Copy Service.
- The Milwaukee Sentinel, 1837-1866 has been digitized and is available on-line at genealogybank.com. In some instances, the Milwaukee Public Library’s hard copy index is more accurate than the index generated from the digitized newspapers. A dozen other short-run Milwaukee newspapers are also available at Genealogybank.com.
