Introduction

Wikipedia
Wikipedia has more about this subject: Livestock branding

The practice of branding livestock has existed since ancient times. In the Western European traditions, inherited by the United States, livestock brands were registered with local or state governments. The "brand" became a property right that could be bought, sold, leased and inherited. For example, early town records in New England contain lists of the brands used by the local residents.
