Tom Green County has had five courthouses and two county seats. When the county was first organized, the town of Ben Ficklin was chosen as the county seat and an adobe building was used as a courthouse.&nbsp; A stone courthouse was soon built. After the town was destroyed by a flood in 1882, the county seat was moved to the larger and more centrally located San Angelo, where the third Tom Green Courthouse was completed in 1884.<ref>Handbook of Texas Online: Tom Green County http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/hct07</ref> The current courthouse was built in 1928.<br>

County Courthouse

Tom Green County has had five courthouses and two county seats. When the county was first organized, the town of Ben Ficklin was chosen as the county seat and an adobe building was used as a courthouse.  A stone courthouse was soon built. After the town was destroyed by a flood in 1882, the county seat was moved to the larger and more centrally located San Angelo, where the third Tom Green Courthouse was completed in 1884.[1] The current courthouse was built in 1928.

History

The original Tom Green County extended to the Pecos River and covered 12,500 square miles. Twelve other counties have been created from this area. The first white settler arrived in 1864. Ben Ficklin was almost washed away in 1882.

Parent County

1874--Tom Green County was created 13 March 1874 from Bexar Land District.

  • County seat: San Angelo [3]

Boundary Changes

1876 -- When Tom Green County was created in 1874, the county had no northern boundary. On 21 August 1876, a northern boundary was created - drawn from the northwest corner of Runnels County to the New Mexico state line and cutting off territory for 54 counties to the north of Tom Green County.

Record Loss

1882 -- Ben Ficklin, then the county seat, was destroyed by flood, the recently-built stone courthouse, however, was one of the few buildings that was still standing. An older adobe building used as the first courthouse was destroyed in the flood.[4]

1886 -- The second floor of the Tom Green County Courthouse caught fire on June 28, 1886, possibly from mice eating matches. The fire started in the office of the Clerk of District Courts. Many of the records in the clerk's office were destroyed. [5]

Obituaries

Probate

Probate records of Texas have been kept by the probate clerk in each county courthouse. You can obtain copies of the records from the clerk's office. In most counties, all information pertaining to a probate case is recorded in the "probate minutes."

Content: Probate Records may give the decedent's date of death, names of his or her spouse, children, parents, siblings, in-laws, neighbors, associates, relatives, and their places of residence.

Record types: Wills, estates, guardianships, naturalizations, marriage, adoption, and birth and death records.

See the Wiki page Texas Probate Records for information about how to use probate records.

Online Probate Records

Taxation

Texas tax records complement land records and can be used in place of censuses or to supplement the years between censuses. Because only persons who owned taxable property were listed, many residents were not included in tax lists. There may also be gaps of several years in the tax records of some counties. For more information, see the wiki page Texas Taxation.

1846-1910 Texas County Tax Rolls lists FHL films with county tax lists. The lists vary by county and year. Most records are between the years of 1846 - 1910.

Vital Records

Vital Records consist of births, adoptions, marriages, divorces, and deaths recorded on registers, certificates, and documents.

Certified birth and death certificates or birth and death verifications can be ordered online or by mail at the Texas Vital Records State Department of Health. Copies can also be obtained from the County Clerk's office of the county where the event occurred and are often less expensive. You can also order them online through a third party company.

Marriages records can be obtained from the county the marriage occurred. Only marriage verifications can be obtained from the Texas Vital Records State Department of Health.
