Welcome to the Taylorsville Utah 10-Stake Family History Center at the Salt Lake Community College Institute of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Redwood campus). We have 20 new 23-inch solid-state-drive PC's (8GB), a Lexmark MX611 printer/scanner, 12 new desks/tables. We added an HP color printer/scanner Mar 2017, a Kodak PS80 high-speed photo scanner with flatbed Dec 2017, the Swedish Death Records 1860-2016 program Aug 2018, and two slide scanners July 22, 2019: a PowerSlide X from Pacific Image Electronics (automatic-slide), and a Wolverine F2D Titan (manual-slide). The directors Jon & Cheryl Thomas from the Bennion Utah West Stake were called May 2016. We opened September 1, 2016.

Bad News! - 8/31/20 - A COVID-19 positive case was already detected from an Institute student attending last week's Thursday class! We were planning to re-open on a shortened schedule with skeleton crews starting Sep 15th. So we will remain closed until some local temples open into Phase-3 (Proxy work). Unfortunately that won't be for months yet. Stay tuned! But we can open for an individual appointment as requested in advance.

    • Off of Community Blvd, a.k.a Bruin Blvd.
    • The Institute building is the last building on the southwest corner of the main Redwood campus. (Just immediately west of the new SLCC administration building)
    • Sometimes while school is not in session, most doors may be locked except for the east or southeast doors. So plan to use those doors.
    • The Family History Center is in Room 107 (west end of the south hallway).

  • Parking Instructions for Patrons as of 8/30/2020:
    • Park in any of the 5 Institute Faculty parking stalls on the far east side under the big trees, within 2 or 3 spaces of the well-marked crosswalk leading from the Institute to the SLCC Administration building.
      • If your car has a ticket when you leave anyway, take it to the Institute front office window to request it be appealed or annulled (or call Carleen Rowley 801-912-0113 or Cheri Bowen 801-912-0111 & leave a message with ticket#). Then after two working days call Parking Services at 801-957-4011 with your ticket# to verify nothing is owed.
      • No parking tickets will be issued the first two weeks while starting any new SLCC term. See SLCC Academic Calendar or call 801-957-4011.
    • If arriving after 4:00 PM, no worries -- no ticketing after 4PM. Just park & come on into the FHC.

  • NEW Feb 2019: PaperScan Pro software on PC # 8, so scans from Kodak 8 1/2" X 14" Flatbed can be OCR-converted into a Text-Searchable PDF file.
  • Chrome Extensions installed on all PC's Chrome browser:
    • Hope Chest: searches for ancestors still needing temple ordinances (see http://hopechestsoftware.com/). Stores results in your FS account.
    • RecordSeek: reliably attach a source to FamilySearch from any web page (including from Ancestry)
    • Scissors Tab: splits the browser into two browsers: current tab becomes right half, left tab becomes left half (for side-by-side compare)
  • FHC Portal This center has access to the Family History Center Portal page which gives free access in the center to premium family history software and websites that generally charge for subscriptions. Click FHC Portal for a list of those premium databases you can access for free while at our center.
  • LibreOffice v5.2 - a version of OpenOffice (free)
  • Microsoft Office 2007 - on 5 PC's (#1, 2, 4, 8, 14)
  • ArkivDigital Online v1.5.4-rc3 - a program to help access Swedish Research easier, then just at [[1]]
  • Ancestral Quest (latest FHC version) - can read your old PAF, then can sync with FamilySearch Family Tree !
  • Roots Magic (latest FHC version) - also sync's your own private database tree with FamilySearch Family Tree
  • IrfanView (latest 64bit version) - helps in editing or viewing your photos on your USB thumb drive
  • Overhead / Housecleaning background software for Safe Browsing:
    • Rainmeter - for desktop shortcuts, such as to subscription websites that are free thru the Family History Center Portal.
    • DeepFreeze from Faronics Corp - for nightly security cleaning of traceable userid/password clues (or during next reboot)

  • 20 Dell 23-inch touch-screen all-in-one desktop computers installed August 2016. Each has 8GB RAM and a Solid State Drive (SSD).
  • Lexmark MX611dhe black & white printer (with color scanner) installed August 2016. We charge 5 cents ($0.05) per page (per side) AFTER THE FIRST 10 PAGES printed (the first 10 are free per patron per visit).
  • 11 new tables, new desk, and new projection screen installed October 2016.
  • HP OfficeJet 8715 color printer (with OCR scanner into text-searchable PDFs) installed March 2017. We charge 15 cents ($0.15) per page (per side) printed AFTER THE FIRST 3 PAGES printed (the first 3 are free per patron per visit).
  • Microsoft Office-2007 installed on most computers.
  • Kodak PS80 high-speed photo scanner (with legal flatbed scanner ) installed Dec 2017.
  • Overhead projector with large pull-down screen. (+New audio/video mixers & HDMI cabling installed 5 Oct 2018) And: projector upgraded 16 May 2019 to brighter, sharper, wireless Epson EX9220 that does wireless screen mirroring from most smartphones.
  • NEW July 2019: Two slide scanners:
    • PowerSlide X from Pacific Image Electronics with 50-slot slide tray. Scans directly to PC # 4 using the CyberViewX program. Does super high-resolution (hence can be slow, but automatically advances to next slide).
    • Wolverine F2D Titan slide scanner for multiple slide sizes. Four slides per tray, manual feed (hence fast). Stores onto an SD card which you can insert into any of our PC's to transfer to your USB thumb drive.
