Alabama Online Sources for Birth, Marriage, Death, and Divorce Records

Online Availability

Online vital record resources usually consist of indexes to birth, marriage, death and divorce records. The internet can be a quick resource for locating the individual, with a date and place in an index.  Record the information in the index then send for the original record where you can confirm for yourself the accuracy of the information. Just because it is in print, does not make it true. Indexes and compiled records have errors and if possible, original records should always be consulted. A growing number of digitized original records are being made available online, however, indexes are more plentiful. As a bonus, the original records usually have additional information about the person and those related to him/her.

Order a Certificate

You may send for a copy of original records by contacting the State Department of Health. The CDC provides detailed information for obtaining these copies for the State of Alabama and every state on the Center for Disease Control website.

Some Alabama Vital Records Online

The following online sites may assist you in your search for Alabama Vital Records. Free sites are listed first, followed by sites with partial free and paid access to their collections, then finally sites are listed that charge for searching most of their vital record databases.

Professionals at the largest family history library (FHL) in the world have compiled their favorite links for their areas of specialization. Links for Alabama and the entire World have been available on the FHL computers in Salt Lake City, Utah but now they are available to everyone online.

The USGenWeb.org is dedicated to gathering genealogical data and providing free access to research for every county and state of the United States. The free FamilySearch Record Search-Pilot Site contains the published results of the largest project ever undertaken to digitize and offer free genealogical and family history indexes and records online for Alabama and the World. New Collections are published frequently so bookmark the site and check back often.  This will become one of the largest and easiest to use collections available online.

Wee Monster has a separate collection of Links for U.S. Birth & Marriage Records online and U.S. Death Records online.  This alphabetized collection for the United States includes some Alabama Vital Records.

A limited, but growing, collection of indexed Alabama Vital Records may be found in the Alabama Historical Records at Ancestry.com.
