Online Availability

Online vital record resources usually consist of indexes to birth, marriage, death and divorce records. The internet can be a quick resource for locating the individual, with a date and place in an index.  Record the information in the index then send for the original record where you can confirm for yourself the accuracy of the information. Just because it is in print, does not make it true. Indexes and compiled records have errors and if possible, original records should always be consulted. A growing number of digitized original records are being made available online, however, indexes are more plentiful. As a bonus, the original records usually have additional information about the person and those related to him/her.

You may send for a copy of original records by contacting the State Department of Health. The CDC provides detailed information for obtaining these copies for the State of Alabama and every state on the Center for Disease Control website.

Some Alabama Vital Records Online

The following online sites may assist you in your search for Alabama Vital Records. Free sites are listed first, followed by sites with partial free and paid access to their collections, then finally sites are listed that charge for searching most of their vital record databases.

The USGenWeb.org is dedicated to gathering genealogical data and providing free access for research in every county and state of the United States. At USGenWeb.org there is a link for each of the 50 states. The state pages, including Alabama, have links to all of the counties of that state. Take time to explore the counties and states related to your research and check back from time to time for new content.

A limited, but growing, collection of indexed Alabama Vital Records may be found in the Alabama Historical Records at Ancestry.com. There is a fee to search these online databases if the subscription is not canceled after the initial trial period. Contact your local library or archives to see if they offer free public access to Ancestry.com with a library card.
