Parish History

'SHALFORD (St. Mary), a parish, in the union of Hambledon, First division of the hundred of Blackheath, W. division of Surrey, 1 mile (S. S. E.) from Guildford; containing 996 inhabitants. It is situated on the road to Brighton, and intersected by the Wey and Arun Junction canal. Shalford House, which occupies a low yet pleasant situation near the church, was originally built about the year 1600, and was nearly rebuilt in the last century, since which, several alterations and improvements have been made: there is a good collection of pictures. The living is a discharged vicarage, with the living of Bramley annexed, valued in the king's books at £8. 4. 7½., and in the patronage of the Crown; net income, £240; impropriator, Sir H. E. Austen. The church was rebuilt in 1790, chiefly at the expense of Robert Austen, Esq., to whose memory there is a mural tablet in the chancel, by Bacon.'[1]
