Saint Mary's County was created by the Utah legislature in 1856 on land that eventually became Nevada. It was named for the Saint Mary's River, later called the Humboldt River. It included parts of present day Elko, Eureka, and White Pine counties.[1] It was discontinued in 1861 when Nevada became a separate territory.[2]
