Record Description

This collection of confession lists for those living within an Orthodox congregation will include records from 1775-1910. The lists are a census substitute and contain names of those in the congregation, their ages, and whether or not they attended confession. The lists may also include the names of children at least a year old, as well as their gender and ages.

Record Content

These confession lists may contain the following information:

  • Names and ages of those in the congregation
  • Names and ages of children under the age of one
  • Whether or not the person attended confession
  • Reasons for not attending confession are sometimes included

How to Use the Record

To search the collection you will need to follow this series of links:
Select "Browse through images" on the initial collection page
⇒Select the appropriate "Губерния"
⇒Select the appropriate "Уезд"
⇒Select the appropriate "Год тома" which takes you to the images.

Look at the images one by one comparing the information with what you already know about your ancestors to determine if the image relates to them. You may need to look at several images and compare the information about the individuals listed in those images to your ancestors to make this determination. Keep in mind:

  • There may be more than one person in the records with the same name.
  • You may not be sure of your own ancestor’s name.
  • Your ancestor may have used different names or variations of their name throughout their life.
