One of the ways we learn about specific topics in genealogy is to read what others have to say on the subject. It saves search time when a bibliography can be located. Mr. Stuart Raymond, a well known authoritative and prolific writer of genealogical textbooks and bibliographies, has compiled many bibliographies that are useful to English genealogists. Each one brings together the titles of a group of books and articles about selected English subjects. It is intended to “help you find your way around” the innumerable published guides for genealogy.

The first edition of English Genealogy: An Introductory Bibliography came out in 1988. The Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS) was impressed with his work and has since published his booklets. English Genealogy is national in scope. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the county bibliographies so it excluded local material. Each booklet is arranged by subject, such as Archives, Memorial Inscriptions or Probate Records.

His published county bibliographies include the following

  • Buckingham
  • Cheshire
  • Cornwall
  • Dorset
  • Devon
  • Essex
  • Hampshire
  • Lincoln
  • London and Middlesex
  • Oxford
  • Somerset
  • Sussex

In addition, he has published booklets on other topics, such as A Family Historian’s Pocket Dictionary, Londoners’ Occupations and Administrative Records in Yorkshire.

Booklets can be purchased from the FFHS Bookshop and from book dealers.
