The original content for this article was contributed by The National Institute for Genealogical Studies in June 2012. It is an excerpt from their course Canadian Vital Statistics Records Part 2  by by Sharon L. Murphy. The Institute offers over 200 comprehensive genealogy courses for a fee ($).

The new civil code came into effect 1 January 1994 which made births, marriages and deaths a civil matter. For births, marriages and deaths from 1994 onwards certificates must be requested from the Civil State Office. The person applying must have a legal right to a certificate and genealogical research is not considered sufficient cause. Contact the office directly to discern whether you do qualify. English-language service is offered on the website.
