Prince Edward Island, Government Birth, Marriage, and Death Records (National Institute)
The original content for this article was contributed by The National Institute for Genealogical Studies in June 2012. It is an excerpt from their course Canadian Vital Statistics Records Part 2 by by Sharon L. Murphy. The Institute offers over 200 comprehensive genealogy courses for a fee ($).
Vital records for this province exist from 1840 for births, 1886 for marriages, and 1906 for deaths. Restrictions apply to birth records less than 120 years old and to marriages for 75 years. They are held by the Vital Statistics Office under the aegis of the Department of Health and Social Services, Division of Regulatory Services.
For restricted modern records, certificates can be issued for a fee payable to Vital Statistics, but the eligibility for application generally requires your relationship to the person and your reason for applying (genealogy).
Further eligibility requirements are:
Births – you must provide all exact information about the birth; you must have written authorization from that person or the parents. A long form is only issued to the birth person or the parents.
Marriages – the same provisions apply as for a birth, providing exact details and with the written consent of either bride or groom.
Deaths – providing information about the deceased “satisfactory to the Director” will be successful, although cause of death is never disclosed on the certificate.
Genealogical searches, three consecutive years at a time, are offered as an alternative to not knowing exact date or place of the event. If a search uncovers a likely record, you then must apply for a certificate.
