Join us Monday, July 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Family History Center and index a batch of records!  Beginners and experienced indexers welcome!  There is a backlog of digitized films waiting to be indexed by humans and you can help!  This can also be done at home.  Go to FamilySearch.org, click on indexing, and how to get started.  There are many helps.  You will need a FamilySearch account, click on Sign In to get one, and download the indexing software.  Then choose a project.  The goal is for 50,000 indexers to do at least one batch in 24 hours!  Let's give it a try!

FamilySearch This article describes the services and resources available at a Family History Center, a branch facility of the Family History Library.

The Oakton Virginia Family History Center is located in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints meetinghouse in Oakton, Fairfax County, Virginia.  It is open to the public for family history and genealogical research.  Use of the Center is free.  The staff does not do research, but will answer questions, suggest resources, and assist patrons with the computers and microfilm readers.

  • Tuesday   9:30am 1:30pm    7pm - 9pm
  • Wednesday 7 pm - 9 pm
  • Thursday    7pm - 9pm  (2nd, 3rd, 4th Thur.)
  • Saturday 9:30am - 1:30 pm
  • Please Note: CLOSED TUESDAY,  JULY 22 for carpet cleaning.  OPEN WEDNESDAY, JULY 23.

  • Closed for General Conference (First Saturdays in April and October)

Closings for inclement weather:

  • We follow the Fairfax County Public School closings.  If school closes or opens late, the Family History Center is also closed.

  • FamilySearch Catalog: This center can assist you in ordering any of the films and fiche available through the FamilySearch Catalog.  You may also order microfilm and microfiche online at familyseach.org.  
  • Many books on Family History in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and elsewhere.  Indefinite microfilm collection is strong in New York City records.  

Databases and Software

  • FHC Portal This center has access to the Family History Center Portal page which gives free access in the center to premium family history software and websites that generally charge for subscriptions. These include Ancestry.com, the Newberry Library, the Godfrey Library, Findmypast.co.uk and others.

Hardware and Equipment

  • The center has six new computers with connections to the internet available.  There are also six microfilm readers and a microfiche reader.  The Center has a digital imager that can scan a digital image from microfilm and microfiche.  The imager has a flatbed scanner to digitally image documents.  Digital images may be printed, saved to a flash drive, or sent via email.  There is also a Lexmark printer that can scan documents or black and white photos directly to FamilySearch.

The Fairfax Genealogy Society is a very active genealogy society with monthly meetings, workshops, and spring and fall conferences.

The Virginia Room in the Fairfax City Regional Library specializes in history and genealogy, and is not limited to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Historical Society of Fairfax County has resources on the history of Fairfax County, Virginia
