African American Research Workshop - Instructor, Genealogist Alvis Ward Jr. - This is an ongoing free hands-on research workshop comprised of African Americans, also referred to as Black or Afro-American, or those who harmonize with Sub-Saharan Africa, with ancestry, citizenship, or residency in the United States. The workshop is an interactive exchange of research tools, methods and systems, and discussions necessary for progress at individual levels of family histories and genealogies impacted by the 16th Century removal of Africans to America as slaves. No pre-registration is required. For additional information E-Mail: firstname.lastname@example.org
Family History Workshop : Write Your History in Stories.- Instructor, Kim Miller, staff genealogist - Does writing your personal history sound intimidating? Does "I was born ..." seem like a boring way to start? How about writing your memories one story at a time? Come once or come monthly, come when you can. Set aside the 2nd Thursday of each month and spend an afternoon jump starting your memory. Write one story each time you come, and you could greet 2018 with 11 stories for your personal history.
Freedmens Bureau Records On-line : A Better Way to do Slave Research - Instructor, Janice Sellers, Genealogist - Freedmens Bureau Records are overlooked by far too many researchers. The records have not been the easiest to work with, but now that they are online and indexed, they can yield a wealth of information. Though they're not perfect, these documents can include marriage dates, children’s birth dates, school records, work contracts, and, most importantly, the name of an applicant's most recent owner. Learn why these records can be key to finding out more about your family.
Paper Basics : Saving Your Families Paper Based history - Instructor, Karen Zukor, art conservationist. - Have you got original documents that need to be preserved? Letters, diaries, journals, certificates, citizenship papers, family Bibles....before they crumble into dust let Karen Zukor teach you the basics of preservation. Come listen to her presentation on the factors that damage paper and how to properly handle, store and display those items that are both inherently valuable and inherently fragile. Karen has been a professional paper conservator for almost thirty years and is a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation. She has been responsible for many collections - including fine art, archival material, maps, documents, and rare books - held both in private hands and at institutions. In addition, she has trained both pre- and post-program interns for over twenty years, and lectures widely to the general public. You won't want to miss this opportunity.
