Getting started with Northern Ireland research

Researching in Northern Ireland is NOT the same as researching in the Republic of Ireland for the following reasons:

  1. Although originally Catholic, over time it became predominately a protestant country
  2. The majority of records are based on English law since it became a part of Great Britain

Types of Records

The main records of value to family historians and genealogists are:

  • Census
  • Civil Registration
  • Church Records
  • Court Records
  • Electoral Records
  • Emigration Records
  • Landed Estate Records
  • Local Government Records
  • Military Records
  • Poor Law Records
  • School Records
  • Valuation and Tithe Records
  • Wills and Testamentary Records

The counties in Northern Ireland are:

County Antrim

County Armagh

County Derry (Londonderry)

County Down
