Fort Churchill Ruins

Introduction

Approximately 1,200 Nevada men were organized into two Union battalions.  The troops protected the central overland route and settlements on the frontier from the Indians.[1]  Some Nevada men also went east and joined Union units there.

Military Units

  • 1st Battalion, Nevada Infantry (Union)
    Organized at Fort Churchill, California, December 24, 1863.
    Ordered to Camp Independence, California, and duty there until muster out. Battalion mustered out December 23, 1865.
