British Colonization (1889-1964)[edit | edit source]
The area known as present-day Malawi was formerly named Nyasaland by the British. Part of Nyasaland, the Shire Islands, was made a British Protectorate in 1889. In 1891, that Protectorate was extended to include all of Malawi. Malawi gained it's independence from Britain in 1964.
