After finding an appropriate image that you want to add to the Wiki there are two possible routes to add an image to a page:

  1. submit the image for approval and uploading (as described in this article), or
  2. without prior approval (as described in Help:Uploading images and files) - This method is only available to users with upload rights (Reviewer and above).

Submitting Images

This article will teach you how to get the image approved and uploaded. When the image is uploaded, it will not be added to an actual Wiki page, but rather in the image namespace, much like a storage space for the images or files. After submitting the image or file for approval, you will be notified that the image was uploaded. Later, if and when your image is approved, you will be notified that it was approved. You will be given a link to your image. You will then need to insert the uploaded image into the Wiki page where you want it to appear.

Step 1:
Log in to Family Search Wiki.

Step 2:
Click Upload File in the "Toolbox" section of the navigation bar.


Step 3:
This will open a window titled Email File for Authorization.


Step 4:
If you are logged in to the Wiki, your email address and name automatically appear in the appropriate fields. Verify the information is correct. If the information is not correct, please update your profile in the Personal Tools section of the sidebar.

Step 5:
Click Browse and select the file from your computer for upload authorization. Make sure you are selecting the right image. It will be difficult to correct later.
Step 6:
Select a Title of Image. This should be the same as the name of the image. Make sure the Title is the correct one. It will be difficult to correct later. Include the approximate date the image was taken. Add a description of the image, including copyright or licensing details, microform numbers or call numbers, locations relevant to the image or where it was obtained, or other important details in the Description box.

Step 7:

At the bottom of the page are two buttons. One of these buttons must be clicked or the image file will not be sent. If the image is a Family History Library acquisition, please click the bottom button. If the image or file is not a Family History Library acquisition, and the image is not copyrighted by anyone other than you, click the top button. The top button verifies that you take responsibility for  submitting the image or file. Click Send File.

Step 8:
Your image file will be sent to the Family Search wiki support staff. Upon receipt, an email will be automatically generated and sent acknowledging the receipt. It will also give a Case ID number, but the name of the image is not given. If you sent more than one image file, you will not know which the Case ID number applies to which image file.

It is also a good idea to only send a few images at a time to the Family Search Research Wiki. It may take longer, but you will feel better about the process. Anything over a few and somehow the image files may possibly be dropped from the system. If you do not receive an email acknowledging the receipt of your image file, then it has been lost. The Family Search wiki support staff has no record of that image file.

In about a day's time from the acknowledgment email, another email will be sent from the Family Search wiki support staff. This email will state that the image has been approved or request additional information in order that it might be approved or give the reason for it not being approved. In either case the name of the image should be given along with the Case ID number. If you have any further questions about this image file for the support staff, use the name and the Case ID number.

Step 9:
Once your image file has been approved, it will be uploaded to the Family Search Research Wiki. Do not be surprised if the "official" name of the file has been changed. It is common to see plus signs, negative signs, and underlines instead of the original spaces. Also it is possible for the format of the image file to be changed. But none of these changes matter as long as it results in an image file that can be used. If not, contact the support staff.

An image file may be searched by name like any article in the Family Search Research Wiki. Type the keyword(s) into the search box and hit the Enter button. A list of article shows, but look to the left and hit the Multimedia link. Now a list of image files shows. Scroll down to the one you want and open it.

There are sections of the image file that a regular contributor cannot change. But the sections between the image and the "File History" section can be edited by anyone. Add a "Summary" section explaining what your image shows. Then change the "License" section to include all the Categories where you feel your image maybe useful. After you save the file, the category names will show up at the very bottom of that image file.

The image file can now be searched by Category. Check out all the Categories that you placed your image file in, scroll down toward the bottom. Make sure that your image file is there.
