'''The Gadsden Public Library''' opened on December 20, 1906 and is a department of the City of Gadsden, Alabama and serves Etowah County as well as the City proper.  The library was an outgrowth of the Thursday Study Club formed in 1899 by a small group of young women encouraged by their parents and who were devoted to improving minds. One of their early goals was to establish a reading room for the citizens of Gadsden.  By 1900, they had raised $256 to buy books and they were able to open Gadsden’s first reading room on Broad Street.  In 1905, the Carnegie Foundation awarded the City of Gadsden a grant of $10,000 toward the construction of a library. When the library opened in 1906, the Thursday Study Club gave their entire collection of 456 books to the library as its initial collection. The library moved to a new, larger facility in 1964 and later went through major expansions in 1985 for a Genealogy wing and in 1987 for an enlarged Children’s library.  With support from the community, the library underwent a $2,500,000 interior renovation of the existing building which was completed in 2006.  The current collection of the library and its two branches (located in Alabama City and in East Gadsden) exceeds 105,000 volumes.
