I am indexing South African Methodist church baptismal records. In quite a few of these, only one parent is listed. The names are tribal names and I cannot tell the gender associated with most of the parental names.

Normally, I would assume the single parent listed was the mother, but I strongly suspect some/all of these are father's names, for two reasons:

1. I was brought up in South Africa, and many of the names just seem to be men's names. I cannot, however, be sure of this.

2.In a few cases I have seen the same name listed as father in a previous batch, but this is working on the assumption that when two parent names are given, the first is the father's name.

Please advise me. Should I record the single parent name as father, mother, or both? I am currently working on film no 004467539 batch 277
