FamilySearch Indexing: Barbados—Church Records, 1637-1850, Additional Helps
Q. On the first line for the Burial of Paul son of Francis Kirton is listed. For the parent would this be indexed under Father / Mother or just left blank since there is no indication of which parent it is?
A. 1. If nothing is marked next to "Father," "Surviving parent," or "Guardian," then this rule from the field helps would apply (and a similar rule from the field helps for the mother's name would apply): If the document does not make it clear that a name is the father's name [or the mother's name], do not index it.
2. If the "Surviving parent" field is checked so we know the person was a parent, but it isn't clear whether the name is the father's name or the mother's name, then perhaps we could use this rule: If the document indicates that a name is the name of a parent but you are not sure whether the name is the father's name or the mother's name, index the name in the father's name and surname fields.
