FamilySearch Indexing:UK, England and Wales—1871 Census, Updates and FAQ
The following observations have been addressed. Click the Discussion tab at the top of this page to report new issues. Please reserve this page for Indexing Support responses.
Note - Please click the Additional Helps tab for presentations on how to index this project and resources for determining localities such as city and county.
Locality Clarification (New 12/5) - Cities go in the City Field. All other localities higher than a city (county, state, country, for example) go in the County Field.
Summary Page (New 12/1) - Page marked No Extractable Data - Example
London - Enter London in the city field, not in the county field. If London and an area within London (e.g. London Bayswater) is recorded, enter London Bayswater in the city field with a space between the two.
County Names - Dorsetshire, Rutlandshire and Devonshire should be used as county names.
City or Town - If there is more than one entry in this field, do not separate them with "or".
Initials Instead of Names - If only initials are written for given and surnames, enter all of the initials in the given name field - Example
Bristol - Bristol goes in the city and not the county field.
Occupation - If listed as Farmer's wife, Farmer's son, etc., index what is on the document. If more than one occupation is written, enter each separated by a space with no punctuation. If the document has and between the occupations, such as plumber and joiner, index it is as it is on the document. If there is an ampersand, replace it with the word and.
- If a descriptive word such as "formerly" is used, enter only the occupation.
Entry Numbers - The numbers on the left hand side of the pages for Institution and Vessel forms are recorded for the entry number and the schedule number of the individual. Example
Surnames - "The surname may have been written only once for the first member of a family. However, it needs to be repeated for each family member." Please review the field help.
Places - When a country such as France or a state of the United States of America, is listed in the Where Born column - it is indexed in the Birth County field.
Channel Islands - (Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou, Brecqhou and Lihou). Enter Island name in the Birth County Field and Parish (if recorded) in the Birth town or City Field - Example - (A list of Jersey and Guernsey parishes)
Saint - The word Saint should not be spelled out in place names. Saint should be entered St However, some batches may still contain place names in the lookup list with Saint spelled out.
Abbreviations - A simple list of English county abbreviations is here.
Arbitration - Record Matching Blank Lines - If one of the indexers inserted a blank line it should be moved to the bottom of the list using the down arrow.
Schedule Number - If the census taker began recording a household at the bottom of the previous census page and continued at the top of the page you are indexing, you should be able to find the schedule number from the previous image. The Field Help has been changed to reflect this in some counties.
Highlights - Some batches are coming in without correct highlights. Efforts to fix the problem are underway. Please continue to index batches until this issue is resolved.
Vessel/Institution Pages - Some may have only 20 records to record. The template includes 25 lines. The remaining unused lines are marked blank.
Folio Number - Indexers- Record the folio number if it is on the document. If there is no folio number and you are working on a previously indexed batch, accept what the original indexer entered. If there is no folio number on the document or recorded in the header, skip the field. Arbitrators - If the document has no folio number but Key A has entered one, accept that number.
Blank Lines - Entry Numbers should be sequential and are NOT recorded for blank lines.
Example Page - Do not index forms that have "Example" in the upper left corner. Mark the image type as "No Extractable Data"
If the surname or schedule number is not on the first line - please get the information from the previous image.
I am unable to complete arbitration: In order to complete the arbitration process, try to submit the batch. This will cause hidden fields to appear. In these hidden fields you can then select the information and complete the arbitration.
1 - If there is information only in Key A, accept Key A
2 - If there is information in both Key A and Key B, accept the information in Key A.
3 - If there is information only in Key B, accept Key B.
Help - If you find a place name or a occupation that is not in the lookup list, please go here and add them following the instructions at the top of the page.
Mismatched Batches - (New 11/15) The Example form is not reported - Example. Some of the 1871 UK Census batches are already indexed with names that do not match the names on your image. If you open one of these batches, please contact FamilySearch support and give them the film and batch numbers. After reporting the numbers, please return the batch with the reason of "Review Image Quality." You can find the film and batch numbers at the very top of the program window when you have your batch open. Example Film numbers already reported can be seen here.
