History

Early Settlers of County

Homestead settlers followed the fur traders, soldiers, circuit riders, missionaries, and cattlemen in their westward trek. Until January 1, 1863, a settler in the territory of Nebraska could make his home on 160 acres of government land. [3](See reference site for full article.)

Description

Cherry county seat is Valentine. Cherry County was named for Lieutenant Samuel A. Cherry, a popular army officer who was stationed at Fort Niobrara and was killed in South Dakota in 1881. It was founded in 1883.[5]
