In 1873 gold was discovered in the Challis area. Challis was founded by Alvah P. Challis in 1876, who was a surveyor when the town site was laid out. Challis post office was established in 1878. Challis is located in central Idaho along the Salmon River drainage, and next to the beautiful Salmon/Challis National Forest.
