Brief History

Castine, Maine is a town in Hancock County on the east side of the Penobscot Bay. It is one of the most historic and lovely towns in New England, first settled in 1613.

The town was once capital of Acadia and became the strongest British fortress in New England, and the last to be surrendered at the close of the War of 1812.  It is home to the Maine Maritime Academy, boasts more mature American elm trees than other towns, and many historic buildings - see
