FamilySearch This article describes the services and resources available at a Family History Center, a branch facility of the Family History Library.

The Brigham Young University-Idaho Family History Center (BYU-I FHC) serves the 3 Rexburg Idaho Married Student Stakes and the 6 Rexburg YSA Stakes with their 99 wards.  Non-student patrons from the area usually go to the Rexburg Idaho Family History Center but are welcome to come to use our unique resorces, if desired.

     Family History Computer lab:  David O. McKay Library, basement of west wing

Parking on campus is by permit only from 7:00 am - 4:00 pm.  Parking on the streets with-in 2 blocks of campus is by city permit only from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.  There are a few visitor stalls around campus for visitors, these do not require a permit.  If you will be coming often you can obtain a visitors permit that will allow you to park in any of the parking lots.

To find the family history center enter the north door of the David O. McKay Library, go up one flight of stairs, walk past the end of the bookselves, turn right along the wall, the Family History Center will be on your right, in an alcove, as you walk along the bookself.

     Monday: 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

     Tuesday - Thursday:9:00 am - 9:00 pm

     Friday - Saturday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Family History Computer Lab

     Sunday: 10:00 am - 7:00 pm,  Monday and Tuesday nights 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm by appointment only

Holiday Schedule:

     Thanksgiving: Closed Wednesday, November 23rd through and including Sunday, November 27th

     Christmas/New Years: Closed Wednesday, December 21st through and including Monday, January 2nd

Center Resources


  • Family History Library Catalog: This center has the ability to order any of the films and fiche available through the Family History Library Catalog.
  • FHC Microfilm/Microfiche Search: You may determine which microfilm and microfiche the center has on indefinite loan by typing the film/fiche number into this search.
  • Family History Books: Many library books, dealing with family history, are located in the FHC. There a "How to" books, "Where to find information" books, Gazatters and maps,  etc. Other genealogy books are located in the holdings of the library.
  • Local Newspapers: The library's collection of microfilms of local newspapers are available at the FHC. Newspapers are a valuable genealogical resource for finding obituaries, marriage notices, and miscelaneous articles.

Databases and Software

  • Even though this center does not have access to the Family History Center Portal page the University has subscriptions to premium family history software and websites that can be used when on campus.

Hardware and Equipment

  • 13 Computers (Windows 7): In addition to normal software the FHC computers have the following Family History software installed:
    a) Personal family history record management programs:
    RootsMagic, Ancestral Quest,  Legacy Family Tree, PAF and FamilyInsight,
    b) AniMap - Used to find territories, states, and county boundaries over the years. Can plot a town and see which counties it was in over the years.
    c) IrfanView - free image editing software
    d) ParLoc3 - a program to locate parishes in Great Britain
    e) Pedigree Resource File - Pedigree charts submitted by members and non-members over the years (also available online at
  • Microfilm readers and scanner - There are two manual microfilm readers, two electrical microfilm/microfiche reader/scanners, one electrical microfilm/microfiche reader and one microfiche reader.
  • Flatbed scanners: There are two flatbed scanners for scanning pictures and documents to store on a flash drive as a digital image. The images can then be attached to records in RootsMagic, etc.
  • Digital camera: There is a digital camera in the metal cabinet that missionaries can use to help you take a picture of a microfilm frame and download it to a flash drive as a digital image.
  • Printer: Access to a library printer which can print from the FHC computers ($.04 per sheet), copy documents ($.04 per sheet), and scan documents and photos and email them (free) in PDF, tiff or jpeg formats.

Staff Research Specialties

Individuals specializing in the following countries and/or languages are available: Denmark, England, French, German, Ireland, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norway, Polynesia, Russian, Scotland, Spanish, Spanish (Peru), Swedish. A list of contact information is available at the FHC.

Since we are on the University campus we have access to students from many areas of the world that can help read or write many different langauges.

Remember to check local libraries, courthouses, archives, historical societies, churches, and cemeteries where your ancestors lived for records relating to your ancestral families.
