History

The addition to Brewster county in 1897 of two proposed new counties made Brewster County the largest in Texas in terms of land area.

Parent County

1887--Brewster County was 2 February 1887 from Presidio County. County seat: Alpine [1]

The county was named for Henry P. Brewster, (1816-1884). Henry Percy (Persy) Brewster, lawyer and personal secretary of Sam Houston, was born on November 22, 1816, in the Laurens District, South Carolina, where he studied and began the practice of law. In 1849 he was appointed attorney general by Governor George T. Wood.
