Benedicta is an extinct town, now an unorganized territory (township) in the South Aroostook townships. Benedicta was purchased and settled by Roman Catholics at first in Penobscot County (now Aroostook County) in 1834.[1] It was organized into a town in 1872, but surrendered that incorporation in 1987.[2]

Other Names. Benedicta has also been known as Westerly half of Township No. 2, Fifth Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T2 R5 WELS); and also known as Catholic Township.[2]

County. Aroostook County was set off from parts of Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, and Washington counties in 1839.

Records. Several histories exist, and a 1837 census.[2] Some of the town's vital records starting in 1928 apparently are preserved in Caribou, Maine.[3] It is likely further birth, marriage and death data are found in the Catholic parish register.
