Cemetery records, such as tombstone and sexton’s records, have value in that they may give birth and death dates, age at death, name of spouse and children, a maiden name or, occasionally, a birthplace. Tombstones may have symbols or insignias indicating military service and social or religious affiliations. It is important to look at surrounding tombstones because family members may also be buried nearby.

Locating Cemeteries

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) collection contains tombstone inscriptions from Arizona cemeteries. This collection is described in Arizona Genealogy. An important compilation of inscriptions from small cemeteries throughout the state is:

  • Arizona Death Records: An Index Compiled from Mortuary, Cemetery, and Church Records. Three Volumes. Tucson, Arizona: Arizona State Genealogical Society, 1976-82. (Family History Library book 979.1 V3a; fiche 6019995-97.)

Online Resources

  • Find A Grave can be searched by the name of a person, family or cemetery. Usually gives birth and death dates and often comes with a picture of the tombstone. May also give obituaries, biographical information and names of family members with links to their information in Find A Grave.
  • Search and browse cemetery burial records
  • Billion Graves Download photos of tombstones, shows a map of the cemetery to give approximate location of grave.
  • Names in Stone is an online repository designed to help researchers find and document cemetery records and with interactive maps that show each grave’s location.
