Brief History

The 1st Regiment, Ohio Light Artillery mustered in between August and December 1861 at various places in Ohio.  They were mustered out June through August 1865. [1]

The 1st Ohio Artillery Militia was organized before the Civil War began, under Colonel James Barnett. After serving three months in West Virginia, it was mustered for three years. Each battery has a separate history, since each served almost independently. This regiment was involved in  nearly all of the great battles of the war.[2] See also 1st Regiment, Ohio Light Artillery Militia (3 months, 1861).

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
