Brief History

The 104th Regiment was organized at Geneseo, Livingston, N. Y. between October, 1861, and March, 1862. It was also known as Wadsworth Guards and the Livingston County Regiment.[1]
This regiment had duty at Washington, D.C. until July, 1865.[2] The regiment mustered out July 17, 1865 under Colonel John R. Strang.[3]

The New York State Military Museum website has a unit history project page for the 104th Infantry Regiment, also known as Seward Infantry. It includes an historical sketch

The Civil War in the East website gives a timeline for the involvement of 104th New York Infantry Regiment in the war.

An overview of the involvement of this regiment in the Antietam Campaign can be seen on the "Antietam on the Web" website.

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Wadsworth Guards - the company's flag is maintained at the Livingston County Historical Society and Museum in New York.

See the Regiment Roster, for listing of individuals, their company and their involvement.

Company A - principally recruited from Nunda, Livingston County

Company B - principally recruited from Springwater, Livingston County

Company C - principally recruited from Centerville, Allegany County; Eagle and Pike, both of  Wyoming County

Company D - principally recruited from Geneseo, Livingston County

Company E -  principally recruited from Groveland,Livingston County; Cohocton, Steuben County; and Burns, Allegany County

Company F -  principally recruited from Rochester, Monroe County

Company G - principally recruited from Fowlerville, Livingston County; Alabama, Genesee County; and Gainesville, Wyoming County

Company H - principally recruited from Troy, Albany County

Company I - principally recruited from Troy, Albany County

Company K - principally recruited from Troy and Cohoes in Albany County
