Family Registers and Personal Identity Cards

Research use: Verifies family linkages from other records, shows relationships, places of birth, previous residence, extended families.

Record type: Each household in Vietnam is required to keep a family registration record, which gives the vital information on each person in the household. Each individual is also required to be personally registered.

Time Period: 1945-present.

Content: Names of residents, relationship to head of house; sex, sometimes place of birth, race, civil status, military status, literacy status, birth, and marriage data for all family members.

Location: National Civil Registration Office, local police registry offices.

Population coverage: 70%.

Reliability: Good.[1]
