LAFHL menu template is not working, only text and position tags
Jane, I just sent you an email on this, but thought I'd put it in your Mentor Talk box too.

I edited the menu template to widen it and make it taller. Edit worked fine. Subsequent work on a linked page to edit up the body text to be just under the Menu template and ... seemed to be fine, but later check on preview, the menu location and substance had changed to tag info for font, positioning, with the beginning of the template down in the body text section, but only the beginning. I thought I'd get it back with a history undo, but that didn't help. Can you check for me and then if fixable tell me how, or what you did if you fix it? Thanks, date is 1 Dec 2011 at 5:21. I don't have rights to this computer's time/date functions so can't tell if its me or FamilySearch time that is recorded below.

Warren 01:22, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Hey, what gives?  I just went back searching for something on our wiki page and ALL the template menus are up again.

Warren 01:33, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Search string brings up my Sandbox pages[edit source]

Jane, any idea how to stop searches for "lafhl" from finding my Warren's Sandbox 3 or 5 when Los Angeles Family History Library users open FamilySearch, go to the Research Wiki link and type in LAFHL or lafhl?

Warren 22:43, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Warren, I did several searches and didn't bring any of your sandbox pages up. Last year the engineers removed sandboxes from regular searches, so they should not be coming up, so I'm not sure how it is happening. If you are through working on those pages, you can mark them for deletion and I will be watching for them and get them deleted as soon as possible (you can then re-create a Sandbox 3 or Sandbox 5). The way to do this is to go in to edit your page, change to Wikitext mode and place the following at the top of the page ...

{{Delete|xxxxxxx}} Replace xxxxxxx with the reason you would like the page deleted. You might say {{Delete|no longer needed}} Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Jane evancol 04:06, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

How widen display below the Wiki blurb on right side of screen?[edit source]

Jane, I have a spreadsheet I copied to my warrendaniel Sandbox 5.  It stops way short of the right side of screen, apparantly because of the Wiki menu that is on the top right of pages.  How can I get it to use the space below the Wiki menu?

Warren 00:27, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Warren, I don't see a spreadsheet on Sandbox 5. Did you remove it ? If you want to put it back on and let me take a look, I would be happy to. Also, if you have some things you want to walk through, I can get us a Meeting Place room and I can help you get them taken care of. Jane evancol 04:10, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

[edit source]

Jane,  yeah, I don't see it there either.  Perhaps I only previewed and did not save it.  I'll redo it and have you look at it again.  Thanks,

Warren 17:31, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

   Questions:[edit source]

1- What is the Start a new talk topic box for at the top of your Talk page, this page?  Does it fill in above the last Talk item instead of clicking the edit option and doing what I'm doing.

2- Possible problem on our main site screen maintenance by other people not associated with our Library.  I'll either talk with you on training Thursday or by email when I find it.

3- I hope this is what Talk is for and how it's done.  Happily, if this is not how I talk with you, you can delete it.  Cool!

Page adopters[edit source]

Hi Jane, Just letting you know that I have added a Userbox to your User page as an example of a new feature that I have built in to the adoption templates, whereby if added to a user page a userbox will be displayed. If you would rather not have this userbox on your page, then please go ahead and remove it. --Steve 12:40, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Getting Started pages project[edit source]

Thanks for volunteering to help with the Getting Started pages project! I have been working on the Help:Tour page and was wondering if you could come share your thoughts - what concepts are needed for a "Tour" of the wiki?  Here is a Sandbox page with the general idea. Feel free to add your own edits/thoughts.

Also, thanks for the changes to the Edit and Contribute page. I moved things back over into a 2-column format. But...the formatting might make it harder to edit. Thoughts? Also, was thinking that those little edit boxes all over the page are a little annoying and maybe we should turn those into bold text instead of headings. Thoughts? Anyway, the page needs more but I am very happy with it so far!

Community Center is next..... --janellv 23:51, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Help/Wiki Forum badges[edit source]

Hi Jane, I noticed that you have done a lot of work adding the {{Contributor Help badge}} to the help pages. I understand the reason behind it, to increase awareness of the forums as a place to ask questions, but I think there might be a better solution. The badge template was created so that it could be placed within an article with text wrapping to the left or right. Your recent edits have placed the template at the top of articles and this creates a lot of white space. As an alternative I have created a new header article template {{Help article}} which I think is better suited for this purpose. I have added it to the article Help:Images as an example of how it look. I can use the find/replace function to build on the work you have already done to swap the badges for this new template. Before I do that, I wanted to solicit your feedback on the new template, is there anything that you would change about it? Thanks --Steve 08:44, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Info boxes[edit source]

Hi Jane

Yes, I would love to help with info boxes, let me know what to do and what template to use.

Thanks from the Wiki:[edit source]

The FamilySearch Research Wiki is delighted to let you know that the “Anderson County Kentucky” page you helped create was a Featured Article, highlighted on the Main Page of the Wiki 8/12/11, and remained there for seven days. Thank you for your excellent work to help others quickly access records. Your contributions are appreciated and have assisted others in finding their ancestors.
You have made a difference in research!

Stub Removal[edit source]

Hi Evancol

We at the FamilySearch Wiki would like to use this article,Ascension Parish, Louisiana, for a featured article on the Main Page of the Wiki. However, the word "stub" appears at the very top of the page. If you feel there is enough content to give researchers a good place to work from - we need YOU to remove the word "stub" from the article before we can feature it.
Thank you for your consideration.

Bo Gbo17 17:56, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Stub Removal[edit source]

Hello Evancol

Just the other day I sent you a note to remove the word "stub" from another Parish site.   am now asking you to do the same thing with the Caldwell Parish site and any other Parish sites where you have been at least one of the main contributors.  Thank you for all you have done and hopefully, continue to do.

Changing a page name?[edit source]

Jane, while I was editing our "Basic Three-day Intensive Family History/Genealogy Training Course new", I noticed the 'new' at the end.  It was saved as part of the page name.  I want to delete it.

I suspect from class that it means renaming it without the 'new' and saving.  Then a redirect needs to be made, but I am not sure if needs redirect, nor how.  Can you help me?

Warren 22:01, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Warren, you are exactly correct, it needs renaming.  The redirect will follow it.  I :will check to see if you have already attempted this.   Jane evancol 21:35, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Your Webpage[edit source]

Jane, your webpage is beautiful. It is a treat to see a page so well organized, inticing with pictures, and lovely colors. It invites people in and to stay a while. And, I love the name "Hidden Ancestors".

Did you create it with "The Next Generation" software? And who is your host? I'm looking for one that is a good price. Carol B. Moss 18:50, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Carol ..  welcome to the Wiki.  Thank you so much for your kind words.  We have a lot of the site down right now updating links and giving it a bit of a facelift.  We use Active Web Hosting (same as TXGenWeb), and have been with them several years.  They are very reasonable, and give price breaks based on how long you sign up for.  Also, they just never go down, or if they do, I'm asleep and never know !!!   Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you.  Jane evancol 19:12, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

 Contributor Help[edit source]

I notice that you have moved "Edit and Contribute" to "Contributor Help."  Why did you you that?  Will I have to change all the foreign wikis to match?

Hope you have a great Christmas.

Charles Smith

It is a move we have planned for awhile (posted in the forums quite awhile back). We wanted to change it to bring it in line with the wording on the nav bar and the forums.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas as well.

Jane I will change that in the foreign wiki as well, then. Charles........

Thanks, Jane![edit source]

Thanks for aligning the infobox and the contents! It looks so much better. I look forward to all suggestions everyone has. Will you mind posting yours? I believe there is something important that we need to understand in your reasons for not liking the table. Something we may not have a handle on right now, but if we work through the ideas together, something useful will emerge. Thanks for ALL you DO, Jane. You are truly amazing. Relinking pictures[edit source]

My director wants to hyperlink images on our San Diego California Large Multi-stake Family History Center wiki page.  Is it possible to hyperlink over a wiki image to allow the proper link?  Please see the images on the SDCFHC page that asks like a page index.  Please advise.  Jrcrin001 21:09, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

We can hyperlink them.  I will need to make each picture into a template in order to do it.  Is it the 9 pictures on the front page that we put up ?   evancol 21:28, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes. Those are the pictures they want hyperlinked to the text below the image.  You are the best! Jrcrin001 06:48, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

See my note to you on your user page.  evancol 19:20, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Jane![edit source]

Thank you again for all your hard work. At this time the Directors are focused on the 1940 Census stuff. And nothing new is needed, until they decide otherwise!

My condolences about your mother.  My mother-in-law is having a rough time right now at 93.  My mother passed away in 1990.  I know I will see her when it is my time to pass on.  Time dulls the ache, but it never goes away.

God Bless!  JRC Jrcrin001 22:46, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Documenting images - Attribution[edit source]

Hi Jane,

I noticed that you've recently uploaded some images (Ogden_fhc_119.bmp, Ogden_fhc_120.bmp, Ogden_fhc_121.bmp etc.) stating that the copyright holder has released them into the public domain, which is great. However no details of who the copyright holder is has been given. It's important that this information is listed so that it can be verified if needed (see FamilySearch Wiki:Image use#Copyright_and_Ownership). --Steve (talk| contribs) 15:26, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Hello Jane... I think I have it right this time.

FamilySearch Wiki:Contributor Support Committee Page[edit source]

While looking for pages regarding communicating with the Wiki I found this page and I was wondering if it is still viable? I have edited it by removing the reference to Forums and the dead link to the Facebook but I am wondering if this page is outdated. Parrisl 17:19, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi...  I think my only involvement in this page was to do some formatting corrections and to sign up to be on the committee if/when it happened.  Lynda and Janell actually originated the page.  As far as I know, there never has been a committee formed, but you might want to inquire of Lynda (User:Averyld) to see if there was still a need for this page.   Thank you for checking with me.

Evancol 23:45, 1 August 2014 (UTC) Hi, I see you are the last to have worked on this page and I have a submit to the wiki that is confusing but is for Germany. I don't understand the German wiki so I would like it if you could help me to understand if this information belongs on the wiki. it is from a terry, and says St. Eligius Church. Church was built in the 1100's.The Pastor's house is across the street from the Church. there are original church records for the area dating back to the 1600's. there was some migration from Lemgo-Lippe north through Hattendorf to Hanover in the 1600"s and 1700's. that is all that was on the request besides the username and email and the Auetel-Hattendorf, Essen, Germany, I believer they meant Auetal. I am just not sure what to do with this, can you please help me with it. If you want to email this person the email is please let me know if you can help or know where to find the help. RogersBA

SEO Project[edit source]

Just had a great meeting with Danielle. Just looked at your page FamilySearch Wiki:Search engine optimization project and saw the updated version of the SEO for the United States, county pages. Hope to use this with the missionaries tomorrow in our 10 am Support meeting. Hope to get them busy on Crumbtrails and SEO for the United States county pages. Sandralpond 16:50, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know Sandra. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

online collections badge[edit source]

Hi, Jane, Template:DC button doesn't have a so the category:online collections badge appears on every page to which it is posted.

Since the page is protected, I thought you may either have the rights to fix it, or know who does. Thanks, Wilma

Community News and Wiki Feedback[edit source]

Hi Jane, I have a couple questions to ask, if I could.

I just recently noticed that back in July you had a sandbox page relating to “wiki feedback” and I also noticed that your new page, Current Projects, had “Community News” listed as a future project, so you are probably the person to ask.

Some background information:
For the last several months I have been updating the Community News page after fixing it up a little and then for the last couple months I have been trying to pull together all the articles related to “current” news so that this info could be linked to the Community News page. I created Category:News and put all the related pages that I could find in this category. These possible future links have included Known Issues, FAQs, meeting recordings, and hopefully in the future, the GC and CC meeting minutes or summaries. Recently, in the last few weeks I have also come across and added the feedback pages (all of which are very outdated). I have been “reorganizing” and updating one of the feedback pages and I’m trying to consolidate several other pages onto this one page. I have also made a couple templates with links to this page (Template:Feedback and Template:Find help that can be added to other pages to help publicize the wiki feedback link.

Any way (sorry for this long post), I just came across another feedback page from 2009 which was little used but which has links to numerous countries; in fact, a deletion attempt was rejected due to the number of links. The one I’m updating is labeled as FamilySearch Wiki:WikiProject Feedback and the new one from 2009 is FamilySearch Wiki: Feedback. At this time I am anticipating that all the “excess” outdated pages could be redirected to the selected page (to preserve all of the existing links).

My questions are:
Which title would be best to retain for the future as far as a “cleaner less confusing” title? I do not know if the “WikiProject” wording bears any particular importance or significance in this case. Should I continue with the WikiProject page or move everything to the newly discovered page which already as the links in place?

Ultimately, if the updating of the feedback page is successful, what is the best way to get this feedback to the correct people who can respond and or correct any situations that are identified? In other words, is there a formal procedure and are there identified contacts for each of these groups: GC, CC, Support (contact LaVera), Engineers (contact Warren), Historic Records, FHC, etc)?

Your input would be appreciated. Thanks, Luccagenes 01:15, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Jim -  I'm going to try e-mailing you.  Not sure if you will know if I update this page.  Have some thoughts on this.  Not that they are necessarily the right ones, but have some!    Jane

Wiki Feedback[edit source]

Jane, apparently the link to the re-activated Feedback page is working as we have received the first feedback comment. I cannot answer it and do not know who to send it to for a response or decision.

I have created a FamilySearch Wiki:Feedback response page with a list of potential contacts that you may want to update or correct.

I have also created a Feedback response template which I will transclude to the Feedback page (the new comment can be found there as well). This page will also be where the responses can be posted to the general public.

Luccagenes 21:19, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Online Records[edit source]

I notice you have created a new "Online Records" button. We currently have a Template for online records in the Wiki. -

- Is this button going to replace all the Templates in the Wiki for Online Records or is it for another purpose. I need to know how to categorize it. I appreciate your response. Thank you Sjkennedy 22:02, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

The button will be going in to replace that template when all of the county pages are redesigned.  There will be one for each of the online records pages.   Thanks,Jane

Online Genealogy button requests[edit source]

The usage of "Mormon" and "LDS" on this page is approved according to current policy.

Would you be so kind as to create an image file for each of the following:

  • District of Columbia Online Genealogy Records button
  • LDS Online Genealogy Records button
  • U.S. Immigration Online Genealogy Records button
  • U.S. Military Online Genealogy Records button
  • U.S. Naturalization Online Genealogy Records button

Question about the WikiProject: England Poor Law Unions[edit source]

Are we supposed to add the links only to pages where the name of the poor law union is in red (in the infobox) or to all of them regardless of whether the name is red or not? Mirandanmacfarlane

  • You only change the ones that are red or black.  Leave any that are working links.  Thanks Evancol 20:39, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

adding categories to files[edit source]

Hi, This is your friendly Wiki Missionary asking that you Please add categories to the files you upload. I don't mind doing it for you but I might not put them in a category you can find them in for later use. Using Category: WikiProject United States for the ones today. Thank you, Sjkennedy 18:40, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

3.2.3 Creating Cemetery Tables on County pages[edit source]

Hi Jane, I just told Danielle but I will relay this message to you since she is so busy and you are the creator of the instructions. I edited Alabama instructions for 3.2.3 Creating Cemetery Tables on County pages Step #5 WorldCat. Wilma had a better link to get the cemetery information and less about slime mold. so I added it to the instructions but removed the image because it was inaccurate with the new instructions. This link needs changed on all of the States and redone on all the counties already completed. ( I have not corrected it on Colorado yet). See what you think and if the wording is correct. Thanks for all you do!Sjkennedy 15:51, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Nevada[edit source]

I see that on this past 17th of March, you made changes to the Nevada state article. Among other things, you removed the "Extinct counties of Nevada" section which had been recently changed to "Other counties that might have records for Nevada residents". I wonder why you removed this as it seems to me to be a helpful addition? Sabwoo (talk) 23:49, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

In checking, I see that you have done the same to the New Mexico state article. I think we should talk about this before you continue. A few years back, I proposed a more minor change (deleting fictitious extinct counties) and got alot of messages of anger and frustration directed at me. I am more sympathetic to your changes, but you are going about it the wrong way by just deleting. Please send me a message and lets talk this over before others start a war over it. Sabwoo (talk) 00:37, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Breadcrumb trail and SEO[edit source]

I am revising the WikiProject Oregon Style and Guidelines page to make it more understandable. I found some text under "The look at the top:" that starts, "Breadcrumb and SEO are consistent. SEO includes date county was formed...". A guideline like this should NOT use an acronym with a well-hidden meaning to the newbie who might want to help with the project.

Would you be so kind to explain the meaning of "SEO"? I suspect once you explain it I will quickly understand, but for the present I do not know the meaning. I will also quickly add some text to explain it for others.

Thank you. --Delvin Bunton 21:15, 19 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi Delvin. SEO is search engine optimization. It is the wording at the very top of the page that google grabs when it goes out and crawls the internet. I need to look at the page you are asking about, as dates should not be included in an SEO paragraph. A typical SEO paragraph is the following "Guide to Arkansas County, Arkansas ancestry, genealogy and family history, birth records, marriage records, death records, census records, family history, and military records."

Thanks for your work. Jane

Many Thanks![edit source]

Thank you so very much for assisting with the whole spamming situation we've had in the Wiki the last several weeks! You're willingness to help with the blocking and deleting helped lightened the load!

Formatted breadcrumb[edit source]

I been doing the Breadcrumb as one of my first projects and I hope you can help me.Two questions: 1. Do I use a sidebar for all breadcrumbs? I was using a sidebar template and then realize that it comes out with Alabama on the page.

How do I use it? Do I put the state initial (ex: OR-sidebar ; etc. (I didn't put opening and closing {{}} around the sidebar, but I
know I need to do that with the breadcrumb.--- How would I do England?

1. How do I use the "Is it linked to the county parish page? (use the What link here - link)" ?

Would you be able to illustrate this on a meeting, so I know if I am doing correctly?? 503-307-8112 Sheila Stai

Learning Wiki to update our FS Library's webpage[edit source]

Sister Evancol This is Sandy Jackson from Las Vegas FamilySearch library. I worked with you several years back. Our library is deciding to do away with their extra website and be only on the WIKI. Sister Openshaw wants it to be much more updated. So I need to know how to use the new editor to "spruce" it up. There is a young missionary trying to work on it, but is very confused.

Who can I work with to learn. I have seen the missionary training/lessons and want to know before I spend a lot of time going in circles where to start with this time off at this time.

my email is cell 702-497-5400

Please let me know the direction to go. Sandy
