Page Overview[edit | edit source]

The FamilySearch Research Wiki uses the Search Box found on each page to access the Wiki pages using different key words, key phrases, and search strings. This Help:Searching page shows how to get the best search results when looking for information on the Wiki. This page shows what keywords and search strings bring the best results for positive experiences when searching for available research resources.

The Search Box[edit | edit source]

The search box is found in two places on the Wiki main page.

It is found in the upper right hand corner on all pages.

Basic Searches[edit | edit source]


A keyword(s) search looks for the subject of an article when the title of the page is not known.
In this example Cornwall is typed in the Search Box in the upper right hand corner of the main page. Notice in the image that once the word is typed in a drop down box of search suggestions appears.

1 Once search the string is entered Cornwall England Census, it and the list of results are displayed here.

Search Tip - Keyword

When the name of any country, state in the United States, province in Canada, or county in England is entered in the the The Search Box you will be taken directly to that Wiki page. For example: If the word Cornwall is entered for search the result is the Cornwall, England Genealogy page.

Exact Title Search

If the exact title of a Wiki article is known, type it in the Search Box. This search goes directly to that page.

Topic Search

When searching for information on a specific topic such as Jewish Cemeteries, type the topic into the Search Box. This search will bring up possible results, and if there is a Wiki page with that title, it will be will indicate in the results list.

Advance Searches[edit | edit source]

Category Search

A category search looks for Wiki pages that have similar meanings and/or focus. Search Box. This search will bring up possible results, and if there is a Wiki page with that title, it will be indicated in the results list.

Restricting the search[edit | edit source]

On the search results page, you'll see "Advanced Search" on the left. This searches "namespaces," a broad category of types of articles that are in the Research Wiki. The "Main" namespace includes all research help articles. The User namespace includes information about the people who contribute to the wiki. See more information about namespaces.

By default only the namespaces specified in your preferences will be searched. Logged-in users can change their preferences to specify the namespaces they want to search by default. This can be done by selecting and deselecting boxes in the ”search” section of user preferences.
