Published Directories

There are many different directories to have been published over the years. Some are specific to a type of newspaper, while others list all newspapers for a region or for the country within a certain set of years. These directories are listed here so that you can see which ones are available at the repositories that you frequent. As you begin to work with the newspapers, you will find yourself returning to such books frequently to determine where the newspapers are that you need.

Brigham, Clarence S., History and Bibliography of American Newspapers 1690-1820 (Westport, Connecticut: Greenwood Press, 1975).

Gregory, Winifred, American Newspapers 1821-1936, A Union Lists of Files Available in the United States and Canada (Millwood, New York: Kraus Reprint, 1967).

Hedblad, Alan, editor, Gale Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media (New York: Thomson, 2003).
